Giving this a whirl because as a girl who doesn’t like burgers, if you give me a week to change my mind, I’m down. I’ve chose to indulge on one burger for everyday this *week. With that said, bring on the beef! (*Ed note: I ended up short a day this week, but I was pretty burgered out. Your thoughts and prayers for my arteries are welcomed.

Hatch Green Chile Cheeseburger with Cheeseballs for $8

at Landmark Saloon

Multiple dates through August 21
I chose this burger first strictly off the image provided, it really spoke to me. I’ve been to the Landmark Saloon before and they knocked it out of the park with a tomato pasta salad, so I had high hopes. The hatch green chilies added great flavor and a kick of heat to such a juicy patty. The toasty bun was such a nice touch and texture to the burger. Don’t even get me started on the melty cheese, it was beautifully cascading down the burger and into lovely puddles onto the plate. No cheese balls but that’s okay, because the waterfall of cheese soothed my soul. Solid 7.5, I didn’t want this burger to end.

Okay, here’s to the second burger of the week. I chose this burger because the description said it was complex. I like complex and breaking down flavors of dishes. The kimchi was the best part, the spice was nice and the cabbage still had a good crunch. I will admit that the patty was not my favorite — I’m sure it was hand crafted but it gave me frozen-patty-Costco-pack vibes, but you could still taste the smokiness of the meat. Maybe a bit too complex for my taste buds, just didn’t quite hit the mark. The gochujang mayo was killer, but could have gone with a little less in the burger — not a smart move on my part to wear white pants. A soft 4, nothing to write home about and now I have to buy a new pair of white pants.

Smoky Pah!: Pah! (part of Portland Mercury’s Burger Week 2022)

Smoky Pah!

at Pah!

Every day, through August 21
This burger is what I want on a silver platter meeting me at the gates to heaven. I initially chose this burger because I’ve heard so many great things about Pah! and it did not disappoint. The patty was juicy, beautifully cooked, graciously seasoned and smokey. The roasted poblano pepper and melty muenster cheese were a dynamic duo on this burger. It reminded me of home and my mother’s chile rellenos… but put on a burger. Incredible! The bacon was not overpowering and the grilled onions were cooked to perfection with a slight char on the ends. I wish there was more of the smokey salsa because it complimented the patty so damn well. This was a show stopper of a burger, truly. 8.5 I’ve chosen to include how I initially started this post because it still rings true to my thoughts after the first bite: If a burger was a kiss on the lips and a smack on the ass, this would be it.

This is the burger I had been waiting for this week. I should have had set the bar a little lower, but here’s why… I stumbled upon this place on a random Sunday afternoon. The simplicity and excellent execution of this burger put me in a trance. It has literally been the only burger that has really changed my thoughts about this American classic in the last 25 years. So when I found out Lo’s was on the list for Burger Week I was weak in the knees. Night one — sold out. Night two — bought four burgers because I needed to fill the void. Good lord was this burger still banging, but it did not compare. The OG was amazing, the kind of burger that leaves you speechless, a flavor that makes you nostalgic for something you’ve never lived before, the burger of all burgers. But I get it, it’s the week of slanging burgers to hungry folks, it’s all about production. While I thought I’d rank this burger a 10, it’s coming up short on 8.7. But only because I believe that Lo’s Burger is meant to be enjoyed on a random Sunday afternoon with a nice cold cider.

Pump Up the Jams: Ex Novo (part of Portland Mercury’s Burger Week 2022)

This was a backup burger spot and I’m so glad it was. If anything changed my mind on a classic burger… this was it. The patty was divine, the right amount of thickness, juicy but not dripping, and oh-so flavorful. Could have used a tad more salt, like the tiniest amount, but c’est la vie. Here’s what really sold me — the tomato and bacon jam. Cherry tomatoes on a burger, pinch me! The acidity of the cherry tomatoes played along so nicely with the savoriness of the bacon, which offset the sweetness of the jam concoction. Beautifully done. Now, let’s talk cheese. Double slices of American, a classic but could have been a little more melty. The potato bun was a subtle kiss that will keep me up all night. Brav-freaking-oh. An astounding 8.

Whew, we made — the last burger of the week for me. I chose this place because having the option of oysters over fries was a no-brainer. The oysters were sweet and delicate, dolloped with the tangiest shallot vinaigrette. But I was really here for the burger… onions and 2 oz of butter? Say less. And hot daaaaamn is the butter tasty. The Dijon mustard and parsley folded into this butter was pure magic. It trickled the sides of my lips after every bite and was one of the most lovely experiences, it made me smile out loud. The patty was smashed and crunchy in all the right places. The onions were fresh and sweet… the kind of onions you don’t let hang out on the plate after they fall from the burger because you can’t resist tossing ‘em back after another delicious bite of burger. This burger was easy on the eyes, simple in condiments, and complex on my tastebuds. 9, without question. Get a miso cookie on the way out!
