This Week In Portland Food News: A Mulled Drink Pop-Up Opens, Bar King Says Goodbye, and 'Top Chef' Star Gregory Gourdet Previews Kann

In this week's batch of culinary updates, a new mulled drink pop-up List has arrived, Top Chef star Gregory Gourdet has launched the new "yurt winter village" pop-up preview of his forthcoming restaurant Kann List , and the well-received Bar King List and its bakery List announce plans to close after just nine months. Plus, lauded brewer Sean Burke launches a new brewery List in McMinnville, and to-go cocktails might not be so far off. Find all that and more below. NEW OPENINGS AND RETURNS

Foreland Beer List
Former Von Ebert Brewing brewer Sean Burke has opened his own brewery, Foreland Beer, in the former space of Allegory Brewing List in McMinnville. Allegory's former co-owner David Sanguinetti has come aboard as Burke's co-owner, and the two are focusing on mixed-culture beers, hop-forward beers, and lagers. Given the precariousness of the dining scene right now, the brewery is understandably opting to partner with Block 41 Distribution to distribute cans to stores like Uptown Beer List rather than opening a taproom or brewpub; however, guests will be able to visit later on, and the brewery plans to have food trucks onsite in the future.

In search of some holiday hygge? Imperial Bottle Shop and Taproom List has opened this pop-up serving mulled wine, cider, and beer, as well as champagne and baked goods. The mulled beverages include "Fruitcake Delight" (Fort George Brewery's 10th Anniversary Barleywine aged in Pinot Noir barrels and mulled with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and turbinado sugar), glühwein (Cooper’s Hall Pinot Noir mulled with cinnamon, clove, anise, turbinado sugar, and orange), the "2 Towns Toddy" (hot bourbon barrel-aged Kentucky Barrel Nice & Naughty Imperial Spiced Cider with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, and lemon), and "Otoso Sake" (Momokawa Junmai Ginjo Organic Sake mulled with clove, orange, honey, and jasmine tea). You can also add a shot of barrel-aged apple wine, apple-blackberry wine, chai-spiced brandy wine, or Underberg digestif if you're so inclined. Since to-go cocktails are not currently legal, the pop-up offers six covered outdoor tables, available by reservation. Guests are encouraged to bring their own food from other restaurants and blankets—and if you're chilly, the pop-up also sells pocket handwarmers for a dollar each.

Hopworks Holiday B Store
According to a press release, the eco-brewpub Hopworks has opened a seasonal "B Store" featuring goods from other local companies that have been certified by the nonprofit B Lab as "B Corps," meaning they are "businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose." The store features products from Brew Dr. Kombucha, GloryBee, Rogue Creamery, and Nossa Familia Coffee, as well as a gift bundle of various items. Purchases are available through Hopworks' website for curbside pickup or contact-free next-day delivery.

Kann Winter Village List
Today, Top Chef star and James Beard-nominated chef Gregory Gourdet opens his "winter yurt village" with individual outdoor yurts, available for reservation exclusively for American Express cardholders (sorry, everyone else) in collaboration with Resy and, of course, AmEx. Gourdet is using the pop-up to preview his highly anticipated upcoming Haitian restaurant, Kann, which is expected to open in 2021. The Kann restaurant concept first appeared (and won) on Top Chef: LA All-Stars's "Restaurant Wars," a challenge in which chefs come up with and present restaurant concepts to the public under a strict time constraint, and was debuted at a pop-up preview at Mama Bird List over the summer. "Kann" refers to the Haitian Creole word for "cane," a reference to Gourdet's childhood memories of sugar cane vendors in Haiti, and is inspired by his Haitian roots. The restaurant is also staffed with a BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and womxn-led team. The pop-up, which is set to last for three months, will take place in the Redd parking lot and will feature a six-course prix-fixe menu highlighting the "bright, soulful, slow cooked flavors of an underserved cuisine," including dishes like ripe plantain and roasted squash with smoked peanuts, griot twice-cooked pork belly, fish marinated in epis (a Haitian seasoning base), and beef short ribs stewed in habanero and thyme. The menu also includes a zero-proof cocktail pairing, and optional wine or beer pairings will be available. Reservations are available for December-January via Resy for American Express cardholders.

FUTURE OPENINGS

Lively Station Eatery & Market List
On December 16, Jessica and Anton Cobb opened Lively Station Eatery & Market, a casual all-day cafe and market serving Odolla coffee, pastries, and "thoughtful pub food" like grain bowls and savory hand pies, in the former space of the Salem restaurant Robert's Crossing List , which was forced to close permanently early on in the pandemic. The market area will offer wine, beer, produce, pantry items, and other specialty groceries. Post-COVID, the owners hope to re-open the bar and add Sunday brunch and outdoor dining.

Bar King List and The Bakery at Bar King List
Alas, Shaun and Jamie King's highly anticipated restaurant Bar King, which opened in early March this year and closed less than a week later due to the pandemic, announced on Instagram on Wednesday that it will close permanently in early 2021. The restaurant, which previously offered takeout, had already closed in November with the hopes of reopening in the spring but will now remain closed for good; its acclaimed bakery will remain open for takeout until January 2. (Pastry chef Katherine Benvenuti's baked goods can also be found at the buzz-worthy new Fills Donuts List , which she recently opened with chef and co-owner Leather Storrs.) The announcement reads, "Bar King was our dream. These decisions were not made lightly. They came after painful deliberations amid a pandemic that has devastated the global economy and caused irreparable damage to our business and professions. While this news is devastating, we remain hopeful for the future and committed to advocating for the independent restaurants whose survival is so crucial to the wellbeing of communities everywhere."

Portland restaurants and food carts burglarized
Tom and Mariah Pisha-Duffly's acclaimed Indonesian restaurant Gado Gado List was broken into last weekend and had computers, alcohol, and some personal belongings stolen. Eater Portland reports that over a dozen food carts were also burglarized that weekend.

To-go cocktails may be legalized soon
Portland might not have to wait much longer for to-go cocktails to become a reality. Gov. Kate Brown has called an in-person special legislative session for next Monday, which will include a draft bill that would allow customers to purchase up to two mixed drinks for each "substantial food item." The bill would also put a statewide cap on third-party platform fees (5 percent on pickup orders and 10 percent on delivery orders) to help businesses struggling with decreased business.

Malka chef launches pop-up
On Monday, Malka List chef Eli Goldberg debuted a new pop-up called Chicken Run List , serving fried chicken in a variety of preparations, including mochiko-battered fried chicken musubi, chicken and falafel waffles, and fried chicken sandwiches. The next pop-up date has not yet been announced, but more are set to come in the future.

Mad Hanna turns into a general store
The beloved Cully dive bar Mad Hanna List has transformed into a general store they've dubbed the "Hannex," complete with DIY goods, vintage clothing, used LPs, groceries, pantry items, beer, wine, and more. After the holidays, owners Liz Hanna and Brenna Walker plan to move the shop into the former space of Proletariat Butchery List next door.

Nevor Shellfish Farm Drive-In Clam Shack Pop-Up with Jacob Harth Past Event List
Erizo chef Jacob Harth will run a drive-in seafood pop-up at Tillamook-based Nevor Shellfish Farm's clam shack, with everything from barnacles, barbecue oysters, and butter clams to mackerel crudo and Dungeness crab.

Lottie & Zula's Sunday Supper List
The recently opened East Coast-style sandwich shop Lottie & Zula's has launched a weekly Sunday Supper with three different nostalgic five-course takeout dinners of "hometown Italian American classics," such as baked ziti, manicotti, chicken parmesan, Caesar salad, garlic bread, chicken marsala, spaghetti with clam sauce, veggie lasagna, and tiramisu.

The seasonal offerings include "Gingerbread Doll," a voodoo doll doughnut dipped in ginger caramel frosting with M&M "buttons"; "Holiday Joy," a doughnut with chocolate frosting, mint cocoa powder, crushed candy cane bits, and sprinkles; and "Holiday Sprinkle Cake," a plain cake doughnut with vanilla frosting and holiday sprinkles.
