If you want to stay home this Halloween, there's no shortage of options for online events and indoor activities (many of which you'll find in our guide to the best things to do at home this week List , like the Rocky Horror-inspired dance film BloodyVox Past Event List and The Blair Witch Parody Past Event List ). But if your costume is just too good not to be seen in public, we've curated some recommendations for socially distanced things to do in-person this Halloween weekend, as long as you're wearing a mask (of the cloth variety, not a costume one, as the CDC advises!). See our picks below, from where to go on a trick-or-treating doughnut crawl to the best places to see the rare blue moon on Halloween, and from the timely return of Movie Madness List to a Halloween skate pop-up Past Event List at Lloyd Center. Plus, you can always check out our complete in-person and streaming calendars for even more options, or our guide to the best movies to stream this weekend List .

HALLOWEEN

Catch a killer view of the rare blue moon on Halloween—it deserves to be fawned and howled over without obstruction. If you can get yourself to a national park, by all means do so, but there are also some great spots for optimal moon-gazing and supernatural transformations within the city. The secret ingredient here is hills—if you happen to know someone in Council Crest (you're fancy), weave up its narrow lanes and gaze over the skyline. If not, a spot near the reservoir at Mount Tabor Park, a plot of concrete at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, or a picnic blanket-sized space at Portland's oldest park, Washington Park will do great. For some dramatic gothic-style architecture as a backdrop, wander beneath the St. John's Bridge at Cathedral Park (and maybe get a seasonal pumpkin shake from Burgerville while you're in the neighborhood). Fun fact: This moon is particularly special because it will be visible to the entire world, rather than just parts of it, for the first time since World War II. (FYI, the moon won't actually be blue in color, the name just refers to the occurrence of a second full moon within the span of a month.)

Ghastly ghosts and worrisome witches are prowling the night, baby! With All Hallows' Eve upon us, it's your last chance to check out all the COVID-friendly haunted experiences around town that we think are a fine alternative to your standard bootleg ouija board seance. Read on List for details on options like a Haunted Drive-Through Past Event List  at Oaks Park, a Haunted Maze Past Event List  at Sauvie Island, and family-friendly attractions like a Spooky Forest Past Event List  at Criswell Farms.

Go on a DIY trick-or-treating doughnut crawl. Trick-or-treating may not look the same this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still traipse around town with a sugar high. Don your costume, if you have one, and plot a course flitting from doughnut shop to doughnut shop (we've even made a map to help you!). First stop: The newly opened Fills Donuts List for Berlin-style filled doughnuts in sweet and savory flavors like Boston cream pie and pimento cheese. Next, move on to NOLA Doughnuts List for New Orleans-inspired yeast-raised creations, beignets, and even “la’ssants” (flaky croissant-style laminated doughnuts). Of course, we would be remiss not to mention Voodoo List , which currently has some limited Halloween specials like a Halloween sprinkle cake doughnut, the True Blood-inspired "Vampire Bill" doughnut, and the heavy metal-inspired "Danzig bar." Finally, head in to Coco Donuts for some classic doughnuts and chewy-crisp mochi offerings, and end the route at the cheerful neighborhood shop Sesame Donuts List

Check out these other Halloween treats. We've fashioned a guide to holiday specials around town, from Salt & Straw's "Spooktacular" ice cream flavor series to Pix Patisserie Past Event List 's magical Pix-O-Matic vending machine. Read on List for details on the spookiest food and drink specials.

Celebrate Día de los Muertos with our guide List to online and in-person events in the Northwest. The Mexican holiday that honors loved ones who have died brings community ofrendas, sugar skull-inspired art, and other activities to Portland.

OTHER NOTABLE THINGS TO DO

Go on a Daylight Saving Time hike in Forest Park. The arboraceous trails scattered around Northwest Portland are one of the best things about the city, in our humble opinion, which is proven by the fact that any remotely non-rainy day will see full parking lots at Forest Park trailheads. With the extra hour of daylight you'll get on this (hopefully) crisp fall Sunday, might we suggest beating the foot traffic with an early-morning jaunt in the woods? You'll feel full of oxygen and warmed-up muscles with a whole damn day ahead of you. Need suggestions for where to go? Check out this Blogtown guide to the park's must-hike trails.

Drop off your ballot for the 2020 general election after reading The Mercury's endorsements. If you haven't already, for the sake of our crumbling Democracy, take some time this weekend to locate your nearest ballot box and vote Trump out of office.
