SHOPPING

Reunite with your erudite lover, Powell's Books, whose cozy Hawthorne location reopens for in-person shopping at limited capacity on Friday. Plus, in addition to its Blue and Green Rooms, the landmark Hawthorne location List will also reopen its Rose, Gold, and Coffee Rooms for searchers of children's and young adult booksscience-fiction, mystery, romance, manga, and more. Outside city limits, the Cedar Hills Crossing location is also open for in-person shopping. Oh, and if you want to smell like the heroes and heroines whose stories line the shelves, the bookstore has a limited-edition unisex fragrance called (*whispers*) Powell’s by Powell’s that "delivers the wearer to a place of wonder, discovery, and magic heretofore only known in literature" with notes of crimson rhododendrons and old paper.

Buy some weed to soothe your frazzled nerves. When there's nothing left to do but wait for the news of who will be our next president, you might as well take a hit (or a bite, or a sip, or a dab) of your favorite cannabinoid to get you through. If you haven't staked out your neighborhood spot yet, our pot shop directory has all the info you need on places open for pickup and in-person shopping.

FOOD & DRINK

Celebrate a belated National Sandwich Day with two newly opened businesses. This Tuesday was National Sandwich Day, but let’s be real, sandwiches were probably not top-of-mind for anyone that day. Still, there’s good reason to celebrate belatedly this weekend—Portland recently welcomed two new additions to its sandwich scene. Kevin and Franky’s List offers creative twists on the classic French dip, like a seasonal Thanksgiving-inspired turkey sandwich with sage butter, onion jam, and cranberry sauce and a turkey gravy jus for dipping. And the also-double-named shop Lottie & Zula’s List specializes in hearty, “wicked good” New England-style grinders, subs, and other sandos.

Watch Tampopo and order ramen. Remind List Looking for a feel-good movie and food pairing? The charming 1985 Japanese “ramen Western” Tampopo tells the tale of two truck drivers who help a widow overhaul her struggling ramen shop. The film tells several other standalone stories, all revolving around our universal hunger for nourishment and connection. Rent it from Movie Madness List , or stream it on the Criterion Channel or HBO Max. By the time a sage “ramen master” appears onscreen and explains the proper way to lovingly appreciate a bowl of ramen, you’re going to really, really regret it if you don’t have some in front of you, so you should definitely have a takeout option ready to go, like Kayo’s Ramen Bar List , the newly opened Koku Ramen List , the newly returned Boxer Ramen List , or one of these other Portland ramen restaurants. The uplifting comedy will buoy your spirits, while the hot broth and noodles will fortify you against the current state of the world.

Stuff yourself with burritos. Portland Mercury contributor Suzette Smith writes that it’s part of her personal self-care practice to “crawl inside a soft tortilla and stay there 'til spring.” If that sounds like an approach you can get behind, check out the latest edition of her column Takeout Club to learn about prime Mexican food options from Amelia’s Mexican Food Cart List , Maya’s Taqueria List , and La Piñata Takos List .

Lounge on a covered and heated patio. As the weather gets increasingly blustery and drizzly, outdoor dining has become a chillier experience. Luckily, you can socially distance outside and still warm up with covered and heated patios. Check out our outdoor covered patio guide List for plenty of options for enjoying al fresco dining, regardless of what the weather has in store.

SPORTS & RECREATION

Take part in the roller skating renaissance at Oaks Park's newly reopened indoor rink. Maybe it's those addictive boardwalk-style routines trending on IG, or maybe you have some hotpants you'd like to show off. Whatever your reason for wanting to go roller skating at the historic indoor rig (the Rose City Rollers just wrapped up their outdoor setup), you can, because it's officially reopened under social distancing guidelines. Reserve tickets in advance and save some room for hotdogs, soft pretzels, and nachos.
