Tow Mater—er, Tabor—makes the trip from Radiator Springs to Portland. (Janey Wong)
This past Saturday, August 20 (and in fact, the third Saturday in August each year), intrepid racers zoomed down an extinct volcano in homemade vehicles during the PDX Soapbox Derby, one of the city's flagship annual events. Creativity abounds, crashes are inevitable, awards are doled out—not only for fastest and most creative, but "shit talker" and "lame duck," too—and thousands of Portlanders come to watch while daydrinking. An ideal summer event, in our humble opinion. Check out some of our favorite cars from this year's 23rd annual derby!

Did you miss this year's event? Bummer! May we suggest subscribing to our email list? Our weekly event roundups will fill you in on the best things to do in Portland, so you're not kicking yourself after the fact.

This plague doctor mask—very apropos for the plague(s) we're currently in.

We all race in a yellow submarine...

Have another angle 'cause this thing was seriously so profesh looking you could stick it in the Cars ride at Disneyland like, tomorrow.

Better grab some extra Lactaid pills for that grade C milk.

To infinity and the bottom of Mt. Tabor!

A killer bunny, because why the hell not?
