PERFORMANCE

A Midsommer Night's Dreame Past Event List
Unrequited love, requited love, fairy chaos, and a magical donkey—it's all fair game in A Midsommer Night's Dreame, and somehow it all works out in a happy ending. The Original Practice Shakespeare Festival brings Shakespeare's magical, fae-friendly comedy outdoors, interpreting the Bard's work in the classic First Folio style (that means limited rehearsal, an onstage prompter, and a fast-paced, improvisational feel).
(Mt. Tabor Amphitheatre, Mount Tabor, free)

(Portland Chinatown Museum, Old Town-Chinatown, free)

VISUAL ART

Laura Berger: Chrysalis Past Event List
Laura Berger's dreamy minimalism feels subtly spiritual, and that's no mistake—the painter started her practice as a therapeutic exploration of existence and human connection. Viewing her radiant color choices as "combined energies," Berger develops open-ended narratives that reference the fluid nature of memory in Chrysalis.
(Stephanie Chefas Projects, Central Eastside, free; opening)

Portland Art Picnic
Past Event List At this Cathedral Park gathering, Portlanders can do what they do best—hang around outside and show some love for the local art scene. Pack a blanket for the event, where you'll find snacks from Kichina, face painting, and an outdoor gallery featuring over five dozen local artists sharing paintings, wearables, stickers, and more. (Bring some cash along to support the artists and donate to a mutual aid raffle.) Live music sweetens the deal, and there'll probably be some great dog watching.

PARTIES & NIGHTLIFE

OPS Fest will deliver a fresh take on the age-old story of jealousy, rivalry, and power.
(Mt. Tabor Amphitheatre, Mount Tabor, free)

READINGS & TALKS

The Book of Greens Book Signing and Q&A with Jenn Louis Past Event List
Head to leafy Cornell Farm this Sunday for a cookbook signing by Portland chef and author Jenn Louis (her simple, yet refined culinary style has earned her two James Beard Award nominations). Louis will be signing copies of The Book of Greens, winner of the coveted International Association of Culinary Professionals Cookbook Award—if you've ever wanted to know how to stop your greens from wilting so quickly, this is the book for you. While you're in the area, make a day of it and pop by Portland Audubon or Hoyt Arboretum.
(Cornell Farm, Cedar Mill, free)

SHOPPING

Hawthorne Street Fair 2022 Past Event List
If you've lived in Portland for more than a year or two, you've probably stumbled across this daylong party between SE 30th and SE 39th. Stroll down Hawthorne for the sunny street fair, which includes musical performances, food, and wares on display from local businesses. (Street fairs not your thing? Avoid driving around Hawthorne on the 28th.)
(Hawthorne District, free)

MULTI-DAY

FESTIVALS

PDX Pop Now! 2022
Past Event List PDX Pop Now! is your annual reminder of the vibrant music scene that exists within our city. After a two-year hiatus (due to you-know-what), the (mostly free) all-ages festival is back and bigger than ever with a week-long schedule of local musicians performing across eleven venues. Look out for performances from interdisciplinary rapper MAARQUII, R&B-pop queen Kingsley, garage rock outfit Club Deluxe, and plenty more.
(Various locations, $0-$10, Friday-Sunday)

FILM

Ferris Bueller and Grease Past Event List
Feelin' blue about Olivia Newton-John's recent passing? Head to this throwback drive-in screening of Grease to shake off the sadness with old-school tunes and plenty of leather. But first, buckle in for a John Hughes teen romp—the double feature kicks off with Ferris Bueller's Day Off after dusk.
(99W Drive-In, Newberg, $0-$15, Friday-Sunday)

Three Thousand Years of Longing
Past Event List George Miller takes a break from desert dystopia in Three Thousand Years of Longing, which stars Tilda Swinton as—what else—a stylish academic, and Idris Elba as a djinn who grants her three wishes in exchange for his freedom from a cramped bottle. As you might have guessed, things get fantastical and utterly complicated. If the premise sounds a little chintzy, just remember, this is the guy who somehow directed both Mad Max and Happy Feet—maximalism is his middle name, so at the very least, this'll be a visual magic carpet ride.
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $8-$10, Friday-Sunday)

PERFORMANCE

Ruby Rocket, Private Detective Past Event List
Zany gumshoe Ruby Rocket is great at what she does—until she isn't. In this clamorous comedy starring Stacey Hallal alongside Portland's wackiest improvisers, Ruby's story will blaze to life with physical comedy, multimedia elements, and classic noir storytelling (we're hoping for smoky alleyways and gals in dark sunglasses).
(Curious Comedy Theater, King, $15, Friday-Saturday)

VISUAL ART

Bill Will: Arcade Past Event List
Catch conceptual artist Bill Will's Arcade before it closes on August 27. The imaginative exhibition draws from the miniature scenes and mechanical construction of 20th-century penny arcade games to cast an impish grin toward contemporary political and cultural issues. (You just might absolve a sin or two.)
(Russo Lee Gallery, Northwest Portland, free, Friday-Saturday; closing)

Christian Rogers and Shohei Takasaki: Curly Hair / Hot Metal Past Event List
Christian Rogers and Shohei Takasaki create paintings and drawings with explosive color palettes and undulating forms; shown together, the two artists' works are brazen and strangely sensual. Curly Hair / Hot Metal draws from varying inspirations—Rogers references queer history and vintage erotic magazines, while Takasaki's aesthetic hints at promiscuity, but remains rooted in urbanity and metropolitan values. Despite their differences, the works fit together like jagged jigsaw puzzle pieces—see them before the show closes on August 28.
(Nationale, Buckman, free, Friday-Sunday; closing)

Dinolandia Past Event List
Whimsical illustrator Mike Bennett presents his latest installation, a two-story immersive museum filled with illustrated life-size dinosaurs. Who needs a trip to Jurassic Park when we've got Dinolandia in the heart of Portland?
(710 SW Yamhill St., Downtown, $5, Friday-Sunday)

I Am An American: Stories of Exclusion and Belonging
Past Event List Hate crimes targeting Asian Americans are on the rise—if you don't know about it, you haven't been paying attention. In collaboration with Portland photographer Jim Lommasson and artist Roberta Wong, The Immigrant Story presents this exhibition of photographs, objects, and artwork to bring awareness to the current experiences of Asian Americans. The show's title, I Am An American, became a rallying cry after Japanese Americans were imprisoned in internment camps in WWII. While trends of xenophobia and discrimination continue, this exhibition speaks to the endurance of strength of Asian Americans in the face of generations of adversity.
(Oregon Historical Society, South Park Blocks, $0 - $10, Friday-Sunday; opening)

Land Art Exhibition
Past Event List Inspired by the (literally) groundbreaking '60s and '70s land art movement, Blackfish has partnered with local Native American artists to bring challenging new installations and performance works to the gallery space. As part of this month's programming, Blackfish will also offer free shuttle rides to and from their new "Sight Land" space, a four-acre outdoor art site in the East Columbia neighborhood. This weekend, Native artist Toma Villa will share their carving skills at the gallery and at the Sight Land location.
(Blackfish Gallery, Pearl District, free, Friday-Saturday; closing)

Motherhood
Past Event List Curated by AJ McCreary, "community maverick" and former Portland City Council candidate, this group painting exhibition celebrates Black motherhood in all of its softness, rebellion, and resistance. The show includes works by Alice Price, Kayin Talton Davis, Latoya Lovely, and McCreary herself. Learn more about Motherhood at the artists' talk on Saturday, which will also include free portrait sessions for moms.
(Oregon Contemporary, Kenton, free, Friday-Sunday; closing)

To the River
Past Event List Created over the summer by a gathering of multimedia artists, this six-week sculptural site incorporates a "matrix of waveforms" that lead visitors on an immersive journey from the base of the Portland Aerial Tram to the Willamette River. The salvaged wood sculptures are accompanied by wind-activated soundscapes, considering rivers as connective networks that unite us across geography and time.
(Zidell Yards, Southwest Portland, free, Saturday-Sunday)

Yuyang Zhang: stupid little life
Past Event List Amid a grueling 20-month visa petition process, China-born artist Yuyang Zhang did something pretty incredible—he channeled his anxiety into a series of mixed-media digital collages and photographic diptychs, blending imagery from Chinese communist propaganda with American iconography in a precise, subtly humorous style. In stupid little life, which closes on August 27, Zhang's works reflect on his queer identity and sociocultural hybridity.
(Blue Sky Gallery, Northwest Portland, free, Friday-Saturday; closing)
