The Delines Past Event List
Music fans who like Spaghetti Westerns should check out retro country-soul group the Delines, a seven-piece band that's borderline super group thanks to the name recognition of all of its members: author and musician Willy Vlautin (of Richmond Fontaine), vocalist Amy Boone, pedal steel player Tucker Jackson (also in the Minus 5), Cory Gray on keyboard / trumpet, percussionist Sean Oldham, bassist Freddy Trujillo, and baritone guitarist John Askew. You see what I mean. Their third album, the Sea Drift, which dropped in February, centers on Willy Vlautin’s and singer Amy Boone’s mutual love of the Gulf Coast. It showcases Vlautin’s literary songwriting style on songs like the somber “Surfers in Twilight,” and “Kid Codeine,” in which Boone sings about a “cool and easy” woman who never gets mad: “People call her Kid Codeine/ owns a lounge off Lombard Street/ Stuck by her boxer even when he went punch drunk and broke / hеard just buying milk she wears a full-length fakе fur coat.” PORTLAND MERCURY CONTRIBUTOR JENNI MOORE
(Polaris Hall, Humboldt, $15)

FILM

Mandy Past Event List
The electrified, freaked-out world of Mandy is challenging to describe, but picture a giallo flick set to a drone metal soundtrack and featuring a demonic biker gang, and you're maybe halfway there. Just watch it.

Rontoms Sunday Sessions - October
Past Event List While Rontoms’ patio shows are absolutely lovely in the summer, the actual best time to go to Sunday Sessions (in this critic’s opinion) is in the cooler months. Take advantage of Rontoms’ big, cozy interior room and the chill, intimate sets that unfold in full view of East Burnside. Concertgoers can cuddle up on couches by the fireplace, order grilled cheese sandwiches, and clutch mugs of mulled wine. This weekend, the series continues with local blues-rock band Tango Alpha Tango and psychedelic rockers Møtrik. PORTLAND MERCURY CONTRIBUTOR JENNI MOORE
(Rontoms, Buckman, free)

MULTI-DAY

Talk of the Town has your back. The recurring improv show will hit the stage every third weekend of the month with rotating guests sharing what makes Portland great—good art, great food, and hilarious, off-the-cuff conversation. Each guest will inspire a ragtag team of improv experts to create fresh scenes and characters on the spot. (Just don't bring your umbrella—it's gauche.)

FALL

The MAiZE at the Pumpkin Patch Past Event List

(The Pumpkin Patch, Sauvie Island, $8, Friday-Sunday)

Oregon Heritage Farms Fall Activities Past Event List
Apples are king at this fourth generation-owned and operated orchard, but there are also pumpkins ripe for the picking at a "less mess" pumpkin patch run by the Hillsboro High School Spartan baseball team as part of their fall fundraiser. Pick up some apples by the pound and don't miss the farm's succulent apple treats, including mini apple cider donuts, apple cider slushies, and caramel apples.
(Oregon Heritage Farms, Hillsboro, free, Friday-Sunday)

Plumper Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival 2022 Past Event List
Listen, we already love Plumper Pumpkin Patch for the name alone (say it three times fast!), but the fact that it was once named one of the top 10 pumpkin patches in the nation by MSN sweetens the deal. And, in addition to all the usual suspect fall farm activities, they have a hobbit house (!) for kiddos to explore.
(Plumper Pumpkin Patch and Tree Farm, $13-$15, Friday-Sunday)

FILM

Decision to Leave
Past Event List Park Chan-wook, the visionary director behind Oldboy and The Handmaiden, won Best Director at Cannes this year for this stylish thriller. Decision to Leave begins with a man falling to his death from a Korean mountain peak, and unravels into a sensual noir with subtle nods to Vertigo.
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $7-$10, Friday-Sunday)

Eyes Without a Face
Past Event List When a sudden accident disfigures his once-beautiful daughter Christiane, Dr. Génessier does what any sane parent would do—kidnap a few women, remove their faces, and try to graft them onto Christiane's. But radical plastic surgery is never simple (natch), and Christiane begins to lose her sanity while Dr. Génessier's little plan grows increasingly complicated.
(Fifth Avenue Cinema, Southwest Portland, $0-$7, Friday-Sunday)

Tár
Past Event List Some have described the journey Tár takes us on as one about cancel culture: a phrase that can mean whatever one wants it to mean at this point, though this easy categorization feels far too neat and Internet-brained. A more apt comparison would be to 2014’s Whiplash, a film that explores ambition and power—though Tár contains more humor and a willingness to poke fun at its central subject. Without tipping off exactly what happens, those who stick out the two and a half hour film are treated to a final, fraught, and unexpected punchline. It cements. Field's tragicomedy uncovers the full picture of a unique figure in all her grim glory. PORTLAND MERCURY WRITER CHASE HUTCHINSON
(Cinema 21, Nob Hill, $8-$11, Friday-Sunday)

Wendell and Wild
Past Event List Henry Selick, the downright brilliant director behind The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, returns with more visionary stop-motion animation for this fun goth flick featuring the voices of Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, and Angela Bassett. Wendell and Wild follows two mischievous demons whose journey to the "Land of the Living" hinges on the help of a wry 13-year-old girl.
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $7-$10, Friday-Sunday)

FOOD & DRINK

Apple Fest Past Event List
The specialty marketplace Providore Fine Foods will feature tastings of 18 different apple varieties, plus apple pastries from Little T Baker, apple sausage from Revel Meat Co., apple cider tastings, seasonal arrangements from Hilary Horvath Flowers, apple and cheese pairings, and TwoXSea oysters with apple mignonette.
(Providore Fine Foods, Kerns, free, Saturday-Sunday)

(SATOR Projects, Central Eastside, free, Friday-Saturday; closing)

Chris Burnett: Colibri Past Event List
LA-based artist Chris Burnett, a tastemaker who's designed for heavy hitters like Kendrick Lamar, Odd Future, and Baby Keem, presents a series of glossy mixed-media collages for this solo exhibition. One surprising inspiration? Hummingbirds—Burnett has felt a strange affinity for the fluttering buddies over the last few years, and they show up as a recurring motif throughout the ultra-contemporary show.
(Fisk, North Portland, free, Friday-Sunday)

Portland TextileX Month
Past Event List Exploring a "regeneration" theme this year, the Portland TextileX Month (PTXM) is back to explore everything from myths and rituals to community building and protesting through diverse textile exhibitions and workshops.
