FRIDAY

FILM

Nordic Northwest Outdoor Film Screenings
Past Event List Whether you're in Oslo or the Pacific Northwest, no summer is complete without catching an outdoor movie screening (or five). Nordic Northwest agrees, and their new film programming offers a little something for everyone's cinema tastes, from the arty and avant-garde to lighthearted and fun. On July 8, get ready to "take on" the night at their screening of raucous doc A-Ha: The Movie. Attendees will find a range of Oregon wines, beers, and non-alcoholic options to keep their thirst at bay during each screening.
(Nordic Northwest, Southwest Portland, $15 per vehicle)

Vinegar Syndrome Secret Screening
Past Event List Film restoration whizzes Vinegar Syndrome are heading to Hollywood to share a secret flick from their ultra-creepy catalog. They've got an extensive array of bizarre underground horror to choose from, but their choice for this screening is classified info—you'll have to show up to find out. (Want a hint? Expect a rarely-seen mid-'70s genre classic.) Theresa Mercado, programmer of Denver-based film series Scream Screen, will host the event, and Vinegar Syndrome will also hit Movie Madness on July 9 for a pop-up shop of cool merch and physical media.
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $8-$10)

Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters Past Event List
Feminist Americana-rock ensemble Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters, whom PopMatters described as having "tenacious swagger," will play in support of their latest album, Live from the Blue Moon, which features a selection of bluegrass-infused originals and familiar classics like Tom Petty's "American Girl." The hootenanny will get started with local support from psych-rock group Mama Sam and The Jam and country singer/guitarist Alison Self.
(Mississippi Studios, Boise, $12)

Rockin' the Walk Concert Series Presented by Mad Tasty Past Event List
West Coast League baseball team the Portland Pickles will team up with Mad Tasty (a beverage company founded by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder) for a series of pre-game live concerts at select Friday home games throughout the summer, continuing this week with the Portland-based funk-rock six-piece, Left on Tenth.

(Jack London Revue, Downtown, $15)

PERFORMANCE

Henry V Past Event List
Sprawl out on the grass for Shakespearean hijinks—Henry V blends the events of the Hundred Years' War, the Battle of Agincourt, and good guy Henry V's tumultuous life. The beloved historical play isn't all swordfights and patriotism, though; there are also jokes about tennis balls and leeks, shifty criminals, and attempts at romance. Sign us up!
(Laurelhurst Park, Laurelhurst, free)

VISUAL ART

Mad Madder Maddalena Past Event List
Isaac Yoder's Mad Madder Maddalena blends reds, pinks, and browns in an earthy interpretation of devotional art. Centering the contentious figure of Mary Magdalene, Yoder used madder plants to create a rusty hue that was popular among textile dyers of medieval Europe. The ancient dye plant blends with glitter, screenprinted text, and Polaroid images for a push-pull between traditional and contemporary mediums, bringing new life to ancient imagery.
(after/time collective, Irvington, free)

SATURDAY

ACTIVISM & SOCIAL JUSTICE

Bake Sale Fundraiser for Abortion Access Past Event List
The "bespoke buttercream" specialist Alchemy Desserts will join forces with baker friends, including Zuckercreme, Saint Frances, TumTum, Little Red's Bakeshop, Jen's Pastries, and more, to raise funds for abortion rights. Every cent of the elaborate confections sold will go to Planned Parenthood.
(Montelupo Market, Kerns)

(Atfalati Park, Tualatin, free)

FILM

Outdoor Movies in Oregon State Parks
Past Event List If there's one thing Oregonians love more than watching movies, it's being in nature. Why not both? Hollywood Theater has teamed up with the Oregon State Parks Department to offer a series of screenings in scenic state parks throughout the summer, including retro sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks at Stub Stewart State Park this weekend.
(L.L. Stub Stewart State Park, Buxton, free)

(Cascadia Heights, Sylvan-Highlands)

(Oregon Convention Center, Lloyd District, free)

MOsley WOtta
Past Event List Multi-media artist MOsley WOtta will bring you a captivating evening of digital animation, recorded video, sound design, spoken word, hip-hop, theater, and discussion, in support of his powerful new album, IT’s NOT THE YEAR IT’s YOU, which explores "identity prejudice, radically inclusive care, ecological stewardship, and the responsibility we have to each other."
(Aladdin Theater, Brooklyn, $15)

Load up on goods from over a dozen local vendors while rocking out to tunes from vocalist Monica Nelson (formerly of '80s Portland punk band The Obituaries) accompanied by the Jack London Trio, garage rock quintet The Macks, instrumental surf rock trio King Ghidora, and plenty more.
(Star Theater, Old Town-Chinatown, $12)

SHOPPING

Comics Sidewalk Sale Past Event List
Calling all comic connoisseurs! Cosmic Monkey's basement is overflowing with floppies, so they're clearing out the space and offering up 75 long boxes of random comics. Stop by and browse through the bins for secret superhero treasures—for this epic one-day sale, comic books are only a dollar a pop.
(Cosmic Monkey Comics, Rose City Park, free)

Mississippi Street Fair
Past Event List It makes sense that one of Portland's busiest streets is also home to one of the city's most boisterous street fairs, and Mississippi Avenue isn't showing any signs of letting up for the latest iteration of its annual celebration. Browse local products, arts, and crafts from hundreds of vendors while enjoying tasty treats and refreshing beverages, three stages of live music, a “Grandfathers Rib-Off” competition, and much more. Performance highlights include local honky-tonk heroes Jenny Don't and The Spurs, powerhouse soul/funk diva Arietta Ward, neo-soul vocalist M A N E, and queer noise rock trio Gaytheist.
(Mississippi Street, Boise, free)

(Hampton Opera Center, Hosford-Abernethy, $10-$25)

VISUAL ART

Mariel Capanna Past Event List
Philly-born painter Mariel Capanna's works feel like busy moments frozen in time. Using imagery from documentaries and home videos, Capanna "indexes" brief instances, capturing the spirit of the scene in quick, gestural compositions. The results feel like recalled memories, centering sensory input, colors, and moods as central aspects of experience.
(Adams and Ollman, Northwest Portland, free; opening)

Stella Zhong Past Event List
Stella Zhong's artistic practice is nothing if not complex—the NYC-based creator draws from astrophysics and anthropological concepts to engage with built environments, mysterious objects, and "worlds as propositions." Zhong's model worlds are imagined with radically different modes of power, empathy, and knowledge, separated from a human-centric perspective. How Zhong's futurist works will translate in this solo exhibition remains to be seen, but we're intrigued.
(Adams and Ollman, Northwest Portland, free; opening)

SUNDAY

FILM

Church of Film: Celebration in The Botanical Garden Past Event List
This 1969 flick is arguably the perfect summer film. Set in a small village in Western Slovakia, Celebration in the Botanical Garden is a folksy frolic of bright colors and lush flora punctuated by a series of strange, enchanting stories. The film feels like a non-stop carnival ride, which is seemingly just what director Elo Havetta intended—for this debut feature, he was inspired by slapstick comedy, folk traditions, and naïve art.
(The Red Fox, Humboldt, free)

LIVE MUSIC

Cola, YUVEES, Sheers, and Illegal Son Past Event List
Tim Darcy and Ben Stidworthy, members of Montreal-based quartet Ought, teamed up with US Girls drummer Evan Cartwright to embark on this new project. On Cola's debut album, Deep in View, they employ melodic guitars, David Byrne-esque vocals, and off-beat percussion for post-punk gems that tackle everyday tensions. They will support the album alongside post-punk band YUVEES, art-pop star Sheers, and improvisational trombonist Denzel Mendoza, AKA Illegal Son.
(Mississippi Studios, Boise, $15)

Foamboy with Hard Yes and Up Is The Down Is The
Past Event List Portland-based post-disco duo Foamboy, consisting of producer Wil Bakula and vocalist Katy Ohsiek, will play in support of their debut album My Sober Daydream, which Saint Audio called "succinct yet satisfying romp overflowing with danceable grooves and dazzlingly saturated soundscapes." Self-described "bicoastal indie" duo Hard Yes will start off the night alongside soulful electro-rock outfit Up Is The Down Is The.
(Doug Fir Lounge, Buckman, $14)

PERFORMANCE

Richard III
Past Event List Laurelhurst Park just got a little more dramatic. The Original Practice Shakespeare Festival brings Richard III outdoors, interpreting the Bard's part-history, part-tragedy play in the classic First Folio style (that means limited rehearsal, an onstage prompter, and a fast-paced, improvisational feel). OPS Fest will deliver a fresh take on the age-old story of jealousy, rivalry, and power.
(Laurelhurst Park, Laurelhurst, free)

READINGS & TALKS

Tin House Summer Workshop Reading Series Past Event List
Tin House's prestigious summer workshop will resume in-person readings this year. The event series is free and open to the public, so if you're a contemporary literature fan, these buzzy readings shouldn't be missed. Megan Giddings, Anis Mojgani, and Lidia Yuknavitch will kick things off tonight, with author signings following the reading.
(Reed College Cerf Amphitheater, Reed, free)

SHOPPING

Artist Mercato Past Event List
Organized in the style of an outdoor farmers market, this sunny day of shopping includes over two dozen art, floral, and wellness vendors, plus live music, tastings from SKYY Vodka and Crowley Winery, discounted draft beers from Lardo, and an oyster and champagne bar (fancy!) Free face painters and balloon twisters will be on site to bring smiles, too.
(Mercato Grove, Lake Oswego, free)

SPORTS & RECREATION

The Big Float X
Past Event List One of the funnest events of the summer is the Big Float, a yearly celebration of the Willamette River and the continuing efforts to keep it healthy! The premise is pretty simple: You bring your most flamboyant inflatable device and a life jacket, join the parade down the south waterfront, hop in the water, and have a leisurely float alongside thousands of other water-lovers while you listen to bands play, and just freaking RELAX. Then relax some more with the beach afterparty at Tom McCall Bowl with beer and food carts! That’s a lot of fun and good-time relaxing. This year is the last-ever Big Float, so don't miss out. WM. STEVEN HUMPHREY
(Tom McCall Waterfront Park, Downtown, $5 early-bird, $10 advance, $15 day of event)

Ride and Wrench Series
Past Event List This monthly series by Trek Portland consists of a "casual" group ride along the Springwater Corridor followed by a basic bike maintenance clinic. Each month will feature a different basic maintenance skill so you can be self-sufficient in keeping your ride rolling smoothly. Plus, the shop will have tool giveaways that correspond to the skill of the month, and refreshments to keep your mind and body focused.
(Trek Bicycle, Westmoreland, free)

MULTI-DAY

FESTIVALS

East Portland Summer Arts Festival Past Event List
A new addition to Portland Parks and Rec's (PP&R) Summer Free For All programming, the first-annual East Portland Summer Arts Festival is themed "music and expression." Get hands-on with daytime arts activities and free drop-in mini music lessons before evening performances. Saturday's headline performance of reggae fusion and live painting comes from Aaron Nigel Smith and 1 World Chorus + Sora Shoda while Sunday brings Portland daughter and multi Grammy Award-winning bassist and singer/songwriter Esperanza Spalding.
(Ventura Park, Hazelwood, free, Saturday-Sunday)

Helvetia Lavender Festival Past Event List
Does gathering fragrant lavender in a pastoral idyll sound pretty incredible right about now? We thought so. Snuggled in the Willamette Valley hills, Helvetia Lavender Farm offers up 60 varieties of the friendly purple blooms for their annual festival. Visitors are invited to wander the fields, build bouquets, or just take a chill pill on the scenic pavilion. The farm also distills its own aromatic lavender oil, so don't miss their handmade products in the gift shop. It's all for a good cause, too—festival ticket proceeds will be donated to Samaritan Ministries in Ukraine.
(Helvetia Christmas Tree Farm, Hillsboro, $10, Friday-Sunday)

FILM

Lost Highway
Past Event List When a saxophonist and his wife begin receiving creepy VHS tapes, everything is fine, and they all live happily ever after. Just kidding! David Lynch's '97 nightmare is (of course) a psychological freakout of epic proportions, where two stories intertwine and spiral into a web of murder and deceit. This screening of the brand-new restoration brings new life to the surreal neo-noir.
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $8-$10, Friday-Sunday)

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On Past Event List
"Guess what I wear as a hat? A lentil." Remember Marcel, everyone's favorite demure lil' shell from way back in 2010? Well, he and his googly eye are back to remind us of simpler times in this feature-length film, starring character co-creator Jenny Slate and Isabella Rossellini. The film investigates Marcel's perplexing origins—alongside his pet lint, Alan, he's the survivor of a strange tragedy. But in a twist of fate, a viral video might lead the tiny guy to his long-lost family.
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $7-$10, Friday-Sunday)

SHOPPING

Rose City Vintage Market Past Event List
Some of the West Coast's finest vintage dealers will hawk their wares at this market that will fill the Expo Center with antique, midcentury, and Americana treasures. Even if you're somehow unable to find something to your liking from the vast selection of decor, fashion, accessories and other collectibles, a trip to the market should make for a most epic game of "I spy."
(Portland Expo Center, North Portland, $8-$25, Friday-Saturday)

VISUAL ART

Barbara Sternberger: Emanating
Past Event List Pop by Barbara Sternberger's abstract exhibition before it closes on July 9. The artist's new series of paintings channels "pure expression," attempting to embody utter immersion and avoid any predetermined aesthetic decisions. Layers of accumulated mark-making give Sternberger's works a palimpsest quality; barely-visible traces of past imagery reveal the story behind each composition.
(Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Pearl District, free, Friday-Saturday; closing)

Every Corner is Alive Past Event List
Like most students, PNCA's Low Residency MFA in Visual Studies candidates have been through a lot over the last few years. Their exhibition series, Every Corner is Alive, considers this cultural moment of grief and uncertainty through an expansive environmental lens. Stashia Cabral, Élan Chardin, Laura Jean Foster, Amy Gibson, Ondrea Levey, Kelly Marshall, lynn ruth stephens, Devon Pardue, Jenny Wilde, and Ahuva S. Zaslavsky ponder and cultivate embodied, shared environments in a wide range of mediums. Each week, a new solo exhibition or exhibition series will be installed, so pop by throughout the summer for a fresh dose of inspiration.
(PNCA, Northwest Portland, free, Friday-Sunday)

Pace Taylor: Breathe when you need to Past Event List
Catch buzzy painter Pace Taylor's solo exhibition before it closes on July 10. In Breathe when you need to, Taylor develops a dialogue with the surrealist gender-nonconforming artist Claude Cahun, exploring the mask as an identity-driven self-preservation tool. In Taylor's warm-hued works, domestic spaces become sites for unmasking, and the artist thinks about authenticity, confinement, and the self-portrait in a thoughtful, expansive way.
(Nationale, Buckman, free, Friday-Sunday; closing)

The Repository and The Queens of Rain
Past Event List Marjorie Dial and Victoria Haven are the latest artists to install dual solo exhibitions at PDX CONTEMPORARY ART's fresh space in Slabtown. Dial's The Repository consists of ceramic vessels inscribed with poetic, meditative, and fragmented texts; each vessel reflects on intimacy, reason, hope, and the preservation of knowledge. Haven's The Queens of Rain is comprised of six "painted drawings," each rendered in shiny metallics and abstracted to provoke a sense of the void.
(PDX CONTEMPORARY ART, Slabtown, free, Friday-Saturday)
