FOOD & DRINK

Celebrate World Paloma Day. You may have downed some salty, limey margaritas in honor of Cinco de Mayo earlier this month, but don't forget about its oft-neglected tequila-based relative, the classic paloma cocktail. Made with grapefruit juice or soda, tequila, and sometimes fresh lime juice, the refreshing national drink of Mexico has its own holiday on May 22. Observe the day by sipping one (or two!) or the pleasantly sweet-tart beverages from Mestizo List , Tamale Boy, Taqueria Los Puñales List , or the Richmond Bar List .

Try poutine. The recently opened food cart Poutine Palace List specializes in the Quebec-born delight that is poutine, with creative combos like "Maui Wowie" (pineapple and Canadian bacon, Hawaiian pizza-style) and "South of the Border" (chopped carne asada and jalapeños). Looking for some other places to partake in the comforting Canadian delicacy? Try Potato Champion List , Kay's Bar List , Hopworks Urban Brewery List , Saraveza List , Mox Boarding House List , and Deschutes Brewery Public House List .

Proceeds will support Portland Garment Factory, which was recently a victim of arson.

OTHER PICKS & HAPPENINGS

Visit local pet shelters on Dog Rescue Day. It's been a bad year for just about everyone but animal shelters, which saw a significant increase in adoptions early on in the pandemic when isolated humans became acutely aware of the pet-less nature of their homes. But now that those centers are filling back up with orphaned furbabies in need of permanent families, Dog Rescue Day is the perfect opportunity to make some new furry friends. In addition to making an appointment at the Oregon Humane Society List —which happens to be hosting a remote Pug Crawl Past Event List this weekend for talented flat-snouted cuties. You can also hit up Family Dogs New Life Shelter List , the Pixie Project List , or the Oregon Dog Rescue List for adoptable pups.

Gear up for Bike Everywhere Month. Whether you're a longtime cyclist or a relative newbie, Bike Everywhere Month invites you to ditch all other modes of transportation for your faithful two-wheeler for the entire month of May. If you don't have a bike or your ride is busted, hit up local shops like the women-owned Gladys Bikes List on Alberta, River City List on Southeast MLK, or North Portland Bike Works List on Mississippi. Once you're all set up, take a ride on Kelly Point Park List 's eight-mile path, the popular two-mile Eastbank Esplanade List , or the Tryon Creek Natural Area List . If you want to read about the sport, check out Powell's roundup of books focused on women and cycling.
