FILM

Fire of Love (Special Re-Release) Past Event List
Narrated by artsy auteur Miranda July, this documentary follows the fiery trajectory of French volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft. The married pair tracked eruptions the world over, but lost their lives while chasing their passion. (Incidentally, they also looked like they stepped out of a Wes Anderson film.) Director Sara Dosa's Fire of Love was called "blazingly lyrical" by The Los Angeles Times; catch this special Valentine's Day screening and you might believe in love again.
(Cinema 21, Nob Hill)

Queer Horror: Picnic at Hanging Rock Past Event List
Grab your rose water and your candelabras, girls, 'cause nothing says Valentine's Day like a clique of dreamy boarding schoolers gone missing in Victorian-era Australia. This screening of Peter Weir's wistful madhouse Picnic at Hanging Rock is sure to take your breath away. Screened as part of the Hollywood’s bimonthly Queer Horror program, premier drag clown Carla Rossi will return to host the date night, which will open with a pre-show eleganza by unannounced "PDX all-stars."

Portland State University's Sonic Arts & Music Production program offers this free screening of the beep-boop film.
(Lincoln Hall, South Park Blocks)

Wyrd War Presents: Raiders of Atlantis Past Event List
Italian gonzo auteur Ruggero Deodato is nothing if not polarizing—you might know the dastardly dude from his '80 exploitation horror Cannibal Holocaust, the supposed grindhouse great that came with a side of racism and animal cruelty. Deodato passed a month ago, and this screening of his lesser-known sci-fi adventure Raiders of Atlantis pays homage to his fearless, if somewhat effed up, vision.
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District)

LIVE MUSIC

Mick Flannery with Tianna Esperanza
Past Event List Irish singer-songwriter Mick Flannery will come across the pond to play tracks off of his mellow, piano-centric new album, Night At The Opera, which was inspired by his "lockdown-induced chess obsession." (Show Bar, Buckman)

The Beths Past Event List
Don’t worry about placing the Beths within a larger trajectory of New Zealand music. Sure, the Auckland four-piece has a few things in common with the influential “Dunedin sound” and the reservoir of remarkable bands that made up the roster of Flying Nun Records, but the Beths are closer to power-pop than jingle-jangle, existing in a warm, cozily seductive place that’s not quite twee, not really punk, not exactly pop, and not too rock—it’s a place that can only be described as the Beths, and it stands a pretty good chance of being your favorite new place to hang out this year. STRANGER STAFF WRITER JAS KEIMIG
(Wonder Ballroom, Eliot)

THURSDAY

LIVE MUSIC

Bill Frisell Four Past Event List
Former Mercury contributor Mark Lore wrote: "Guitarist Bill Frisell’s kaleidoscope of jazz and folk can be bright as day or as dark and uneasy as 3 am in a cemetery. His ability to send melodies darting off in countless directions has made him a commodity for composer John Zorn and doom/drone metal band Earth, but his three-decade career has also yielded some fantastic solo work. He’s covered and interpreted the work of artists like John Lennon, Thelonious Monk, and Hank Williams (he even made an album dedicated to reinterpreting TV and movie themes), delivering often haunting takes on the originals. Frisell’s versatility is no doubt a large part of the equation, but his unique style remains intact wherever he ventures." At this show, he’ll be accompanied by fellow heavyweights Gerald Clayton, Gregory Tardy, and Rudy Royston.
(Patricia Reser Center for the Arts, Beaverton)

LIVE MUSIC

The Budos Band with Sexmob Past Event List
Mercury writer Leilani Polk wrote of The Budos Band: "The instrumental ensemble are groove-hawkers of the nth degree, synthesizing funk, psychedelic soul, and Afrobeat with hard and greasy psych rock, all built on ominous organ swells, heavy-driving low end, an urgent trumpet-and-bari-sax attack, and slinking, surging, striding, and roiling rhythms washed in hand percussive textures and rinsed in ’70s vintage warmth. It’s the sort of music you want cued up as your own personal baddest-bitch-on-the-block soundtrack, music that will make your walking down the street feel purposeful and righteous as fuck." They will be joined by NYC-based ensemble Sexmob with high-energy jazz covers of classic pop songs.

Yemen Blues Past Event List
Yemen Blues is the collaborative music collective helmed by singer-composer Ravid Kahalani, and their sound is a rather lush, lively, intoxicating mix of world styles influenced by its generous cast of instrumentalists and vocalists—incorporating jazz, blues, and funk with African and Latino beats and traditional Yemeni vocal melodies. Currently, they are presenting a program called “The Great Hallel,” Hallel being a Jewish prayer taken from Psalms and recited as an act of praise and thanksgiving on holy days (by those who observe these things, at least), and the program’s songs are inspired by Kahalani’s reading into the deep spiritual meaning of the text. Don’t worry—it all feels very exciting and decidedly not-religious, although if you understand Arabic, you might feel differently. LEILANI POLK
