It's a bittersweet week in the Portland restaurant world, as beloved spots like Kulfi and Hit the Spot prepare to open new locations and the vegan sushi cart Mitate and the French bistro Verdigris say goodbye. Plus, the charming bakery St. Beatrix throws its grand opening this weekend, and Jollibee fans are speculating about the Filipino fast-food chain's first Oregon location. 28 Tigers Add to a List
This spot serving dumplings, noodles, and other specialties opened for takeout service inside the former Pub at the End of the Universe Add to a List space (which also houses Holy Ghost Add to a List and the Electric Pizza Company Add to a List ) on April 1.

St. Beatrix Add to a List
Chef/owner Jessie Smith, who took over the bakery Bushel & Peck in 2020 and has been transitioning into reopening it as St. Beatrix, is hosting an official grand opening this weekend, according to a press release. The bakery space sports a fresh interior redesign inspired by films like Chocolat, Beetlejuice, Amélie, The Royal Tenenbaums, and the 1989 Batman and will reopen for indoor seating on Saturday. Smith also plans to offer cake counter classes and aims for the spot to function as a community hub for the LGBTQ+ community, with pop-ups, fundraisers, and a retail corner for products from local businesses.

Bons Amis Add to a List
Chocolate and wine are two of life's greatest pleasures, and an upcoming spot will soon offer them alongside one another. The Willamette Valley winery Brooks Wine and the bean-to-bar chocolatier Woodblock Chocolate are teaming up to open this tasting room (whose name means "good friends" in French) inside the Woodblock Chocolate factory in Irvington on April 30, with curated flights of chocolate and wine pairings.

Hit the Spot Add to a List
This popular burger cart will open a brick-and-mortar location in the former Brunch Box Add to a List space on Southeast Morrison sometime between mid-May and June, adding fried chicken sandwiches and milkshakes to its menu. Owner Jeremy Sivers is also eyeing expansion with possible drive-thru locations in Gresham, Happy Valley, and Bethany Village.

Kulfi Add to a List
Married couple Kiran Cheema and Gagan Aulakh of the ice cream pop stand Kulfi, a familiar fixture at markets like the Portland Flea and Montavilla Farmers Market, will open their highly-anticipated shop with a walk-up window and outdoor seating on April 30, featuring signature flavors like Vietnamese coffee and rosewater alongside treats like falooda (a cold Indian dessert made with vermicelli noodles) and soda floats with vanilla pops.

Living Haüs Beer Co. Add to a List
A new brewery called Living Haüs Beer Co., founded by alums of Modern Times and pFriem, plans to open inside the recently closed Modern Times Add to a List space this July.


Mitate Add to a List
This vegan sushi cart, which EverOut associate editor and Portland Mercury columnist Janey Wong raved about last July, announced on Instagram this week that it's calling it quits at the end of April after its lease ends at the CORE food cart pod Add to a List . Owners Summer Ortiz and Nino Ortiz wrote, "We understand that this may come as a sudden shock, but we hope you’ll understand that we’re doing what we believe is right for us as individuals and as partners. We will close knowing that we accomplished more than we could have ever hoped to have accomplished all while making some wonderful connections with all of you along the way."

Verdigris Add to a List
Chef-owner Johnny Nunn's much-loved French bistro will close its doors for good after a dinner and fundraiser for the American Lung Association on Saturday, May 1. Nunn has sold the restaurant and will be moving to Oregon City, where he plans to launch a new project.


Jollibee could be coming to Hillsboro
Great news for fans of the Filipino fast-food chain Jollibee, known for its impeccable fried chicken, its signature spaghetti topped with hot dogs and ham, and its dancing anthropomorphic bee mascot: The company may be launching its first Oregon location in Hillsboro. Earlier this week, the Willamette Week broke the news that the Tanasbourne Village shopping center lists Jollibee on its directory.


Craft Service Grand Reopening Add to a List
This Record Store Day, local creative hub Craft Service is opening a snazzy new location inside of Baerlic Brewing Company. There’s much to celebrate, so buy some records, drink some beer, have a slice of pizza, and feast your eyes on some art.
