Crawfish Boils, Donuts, and More
June 29, 2023
Celebrate the preternaturally good pairing of strawberries and basil with Doe Donuts's limited-time special. (Doe Donuts)
Independence Day is right around the corner, and it's time to start thinking about procuring some festive food for the occasion. We've rounded up some food options around town, from Doe Donuts's strawberry basil donuts to P's and Q's Market's crawfish boil, plus places to pick up ingredients for backyard barbecues. For more ideas, check out our guide to barbecue in Portland, our Fourth of July calendar, and our food and drink guide.

Bob's Red Mill List
Bob's Red Mill, that stalwart champion of whole grain foods, has you covered for a fun and frugal pre-Fourth of July celebration Past Event List at their free barbecue on Sunday. Enjoy $5 burgers, shaved ice, and popcorn while grooving to live tunes from the top 40 cover band Hans & the Wanted. Expect wholesome games galore, including a watermelon eating contest, and peep some retro classic cars. While you're at it, stock up on all things Bob's at the Whole Grain Store, which is also home to a restaurant and bakery.

Doe Donuts List
Strawberry and basil are a superlative summer combination, and the acclaimed vegan donut shop is uniting the two flavors in its new strawberry basil-filled flavor, which features Oregon strawberries, basil-infused strawberry jam, and a dusting of powdered sugar. The special will be available in stores only from July 3-4, so grab them while you can.

Gluten Free Gem Bakery List
Gluten-free eaters need not be left out of the festivities: This family-run bakery is slinging cherry crumb streusel pies and vegan strawberry rhubarb streusel pies. Pre-orders for July 2-4 close tonight at midnight.

P's and Q's Market List
The specialty neighborhood grocer is throwing a down-home, Louisiana-style crawfish boil Past Event List for the Fourth of July. Prepare to get messy and dig into a slew of crawfish, shrimp, andouille sausage, potatoes, and corn. The event will also feature drink specials and live music from the acoustic American roots ensemble Blue Flags & Black Grass.

Pelican Brewery List
Want to take a getaway to the coast for the holiday? Pelican Brewing's newest Siletz Bay brewpub in Lincoln City will host a deck party Past Event List with a prime view of the fireworks. Lounge on the spacious patio, sip crisp beverages like Sunrise Surfer Blonde Ale and Sparkle Hops (a non-alcoholic sparkling hops water), and enjoy a menu of barbecue and crab boils.

Portland Spirit List
What better way to take in pyrotechnic displays than on a cruise on the Willamette River Past Event List ? Your evening includes a dinner with bread, salad, and a choice of entrée, and a dessert, plus a private candlelit table, live piano music, and historical narration.

Gartner's Country Meat Market List
Stop by this German-style meat emporium to stock up on marinated meat, sausages, rubs and seasonings, sides, and more. Gartner's also offers fuss-free online ordering and curbside pickup.

The Meating Place List
The nearly five-decade-old west side butcher shop will be closed July 3-4, so be sure to pick up all of your barbecue essentials, from hamburger patties to elk and jalapeño brats to ready-to-grill kebabs, this weekend.

Otto's Sausage Kitchen and Meat Market List
Otto's encourages ordering ahead before getting your grill on; the shop will be closed July 4-5. We recommend the family-owned market's grill packs, which include a variety of old-fashioned wieners, smoked pork links, bockwurst, chicken sausages, Cajun andouille, and a package of pepperoni sticks (handy for pre-barbeque snacking).
