Portland boasts a wide selection of drinkable brews all year round, but autumn may be when the city's craft beer scene shines the most. Full of crisp Oktoberfest lagers and ephemeral fresh hop beers, the season allows brewers to put their versatility on display. Read on for our guide to the can't-miss beers to add to your fall bucket list, plus events, like Mount Angel Oktoberfest and PDX Fresh Hops Festival. FRESH HOP BEERS

Baerlic Brewing
The "stubbornly independent" craft brewery just dropped three new fresh hop beers: Fresh Hop Punk Rock Time IPA (brewed with Chinook hops), Fresh Hop Stay Fresh IPA (brewed with Simcoe hops), and Fresh Hop Pioneer ESB (brewed with Mount Hood hops)—the latter took home the gold at the Oregon Beer Awards.

Breakside Brewery
This year's batch of Breakside's Fresh Hop Pilsner is made with Willamette hops from Silverton-based Goschie Farms and is available exclusively on draft at Breakside locations and other spots around town. They've also released Fresh Hop Trade Secrets, a West Coast-style fresh hop IPA made with Simcoe hops from Gervais-based Coleman Agriculture, in cans and "extremely limited" draft.

Culmination Brewing Add to a List
Culmination has released this year's fresh hop version of its popular Phaedrus IPA, available on tap and in cans.

Deschutes Brewery Add to a List
The Bend-based craft brewery is reprising its seasonal favorite Chasin’ Freshies Fresh Hop IPA next month. The release is made with Idaho 7 hops, which contain "notes of apricot, tangerine, and papaya paired with pine and hints of floral," according to Brewpublic.

Ecliptic Brewing Add to a List
Brewer John Harris's galactic-themed brewery is releasing two fresh hop beers this year: Altair Fresh Hop IPA, made with Idaho 7 and Centennial hops along with fresh ADHA 218 hops, and Astro Fresh Hop Italian-style Pilsner, made with Sterling hops and fresh Mount Rainier hops. Altair Fresh Hop IPA is now available on draft and in 16-ounce cans, while Astro will be released on draft on September 21.

Ex Novo Brewing
Refine your taste buds by comparing Ex Novo's flagship Eliot IPA with its fresh hop variations: one made from fresh Centennial hops from Goschie Farms, one made with fresh Centennial hops from Crosby Hops, and one made with fresh Strata hops from Goschie Farms.

Level Beer
This brewery with a focus on brewing "subtle, balanced, and traditional beers" is keeping the fresh hops flowing all month long. Current offerings include a fresh hop bitter on draft, a fresh hop version of the brewery's Pixelated Pale Ale, and a fresh hop version of its Button Smasher #4 (a single malt and single hop IPA, otherwise known as a SMASH IPA).

Little Beast Brewing Add to a List
This brewery specializing in rare beers currently offers Green Keeper, a fresh-hopped American pale ale made with pale and Munich malts and fresh Centennial hops from Crosby Hops. Little Green Men, a seasonal fresh hop hazy IPA made with Skagit Wintmalt and freshly picked Azacca hops from Goschie Farms, is set to be released next week at the brewery's beer garden and tasting room, followed by retail distribution.

Migration Brewing
The award-winning brewery Migration is going all out for fresh hop season with no fewer than five seasonal releases: Fresh Outta Portland (a fresh hop IPA), Into the Light (a fresh hop lager), Summer Chinook Pale (a fresh hop pale ale), ReFRESH (a fresh hop hazy IPA), and Fresh Coast (a fresh hop West Coast-style IPA). The first four have already been released, while ReFRESH will come out on October 6.

Occidental Brewing Co. Add to a List
Occidental's fresh hop pilsner is brewed with a truckload of fresh Oregon-grown Willamette hops from Goschie Farms.

Ruse Brewing
The innovative favorite Ruse Brewing is now featuring several fresh hop IPAs, including Picture a Perfect Picture (a hazy fresh hop Strata IPA brewed in collaboration with Seattle-based Cloudburst Brewing), Karma Terminal (an IPA made with a blend of rolled oats, spelt and malted white wheat, fresh hopped with Strata hops from Goschie Farms, and dry hopped with Mosaic and Galaxy hops), and Fresh Hop Architect (a fizzy, soft Saison made with fresh Cascade hops from Coleman Agriculture).

StormBreaker plans to release over a dozen fresh hop beers this season, including Handful of Fresh Hops, Fresh Hop What We Brew in the Shadows, Fresh Hop Safety Meeting, Fresh Hop Triple Double, and more.

Ex Novo Brewing
Ex Novo's "German Overalls" is a traditional Bavarian Märzen style lager, featuring "bread crust and biscuit flavors" with a "clean, soft, earthy bitterness" and available in four-packs.

Great Notion Brewing
Due to popular demand, the cult-favorite brewery has at last brewed its own Oktoberfest-style beer, aptly dubbed Oktoberfest. The brew is made with Vienna and Munich malts for a "nice sweet malt backbone" and Hallertau Mittelfruh and Sterling hops for "bittering and aromatics for balance."

Occidental Brewing Co. Add to a List
Occidental describes their Festbier as a "rich yet quaffable lager in the old tradition of Oktoberfest beers," made with German noble hops and Munich and Vienna malts.

Rosenstadt Brewery Add to a List
This German-style brewery's Festbier is aged for over two months and features "layers of malts, with notes of everything from fresh bread and toast to almonds, dried fruit, and golden raisins" and a "floral, spicy counterpoint" from Noble hops.

Portland's 2022 Oktoberfest Add to a List
You'll receive your very own Oktoberfest keepsake mug and a dozen drink tickets with which to fill it up at this downtown event. Choose from 16 different German beers on tap—if that's not your thing, Pine Street Taproom also has a full bar.

Mount Angel Oktoberfest Add to a List
For four days out of the year, the town of Mount Angel essentially transforms itself into Little Germany, full of lederhosen, tuba music, sausages, and an absolutely astounding amount of beer of all kinds and varieties, to be drank out of all sorts of steins, mugs, cups and boots. Plus there's other attractions, including wiener dog races, a car show, races, dancing, live music, and much more.

OMSI After Dark: BrewFest Add to a List
Curious about the science behind those Oregon-made beers you love so much? OMSI's After Dark event will include science demos, food and drink vendors, trivia, DJ tunes, planetarium shows, and, of course, plenty of beer-drinking.

Oktoberfest 101 Add to a List
Brush up on the fundamentals of Oktoberfest beer with this introductory primer. You'll get to try seven different Oktoberfest beer samples (amounting to one total stein) alongside a soft-baked Fressen Artisan Bakery pretzel served with house-made cheese dip—education has never been so fun.

Fresh Hop American Summer, vol.1! Add to a List

For a free, all-ages Oktoberfest option, check out this party from Widmer Brothers Brewing, which will offer special beers, food vendors, live music, dancing, and even special guest appearances from llamas and alpacas.

PDX Fresh Hops Festival Add to a List
This festival in its 18th year will feature over 30 fresh hop creations from brewers across Oregon, plus live music and more festivities.

Zoiglfest 2022 Add to a List
This event invites you to "loosen up your lederhosen" with beer sampling, live music, family-friendly activities, pretzels and brats, yard games, and a fashion show. Five percent of sales will benefit the Lents International Farmers Market.

Oktoberfest at Paddy's Add to a List
The Irish pub Paddy's will transform into a German beer hall for the day with authentic beer steins, Bavarian music, traditional German food, raffles, and other "German shenanigans." Lederhosen and dirndls are highly encouraged—a prize will be awarded to the best dressed guest. Each $10 entry ticket benefits Friends of the Children.

Hood River Hops Fest Add to a List
This acclaimed annual fresh hop festival, which took home a silver medal for Best Beer Festival at the Oregon Beer Awards, will offer over 40 fresh hop beers from 30 different breweries, along with food vendors and live music.

Killer Pumpkin Fest Add to a List
Get into the Halloween spirit with pumpkin beers, storytelling, costume contests, axe throwing, and even pumpkin smashing at this free and all-ages event. Sales benefit UKANDU, a volunteer-driven nonprofit whose mission is to "bring joy, hope, and connection to communities impacted by childhood and adolescent cancer."
