In the words of an evergreen 2019 tweet from writer Sarah Lazarus: "every day we have to wake up, confront the most upsetting shit we’ve ever seen, and then walk around obeying laws and saying 'it’s tomato season.'" That being's tomato season. Glorious, juicy red orbs are everywhere you look, and we highly recommend taking full advantage while you can during their limited run. Here, we've gathered some options worth your time, from BLTs to pizza to panzanella. For more inspiration, check out Portland Mercury contributor Andrea Damewood's list of the best BLTs in Portland and our food and drink guide.

Sammich Add to a List
Portland Mercury contributor Andrea Damewood calls Sammich's version of the BLT the "whoppingly huge platonic ideal of this sandwich," writing Add to a List , "Sammich is famous for its house-cured and -brined pastrami, and that same skill is brought to the bacon, which is also made by the team. The salty, thick slices almost steal the show from a juicy red market tomato, sliced to McMillan’s specified three-quarters of an inch thick. (Almost.) Those two elements are tossed onto toasted Grand Central Bakery sourdough that’s slathered generously with mayo, and heaped with so many layers of iceberg lettuce it seems preposterous to wrap your mouth around, until you realize those crisp leaves are the perfect foil to those showier ingredients. It’s on the specials board while tomatoes remain in season; a restraint I appreciate when it could be so easy to build an empire on this sandwich alone."
