Auspicious Chops and Seals
Dating back to the fifth century B.C., Chinese seals were used in a variety of ways: "As signatures on dynastic court documents, personal documents, contracts, and other official papers. They graced works of calligraphy and paintings. Collectors of books and art often added their seals to works. Molded from metal or carved from stone, ivory, wood, or jade, seals were traditionally inked with red cinnabar paste." Join the continuing educations series First Saturday PDX as former Portland Art Museum library director Dan Lucas, who studied seal carving at the China Academy of Art, gives a rundown on the history of seals. Following the presentation, stick around for a Lunar New Year-themed "First Saturday PDX Tea House" chat.
