Coming Home: Memory Activism in Historic Old Town
Vanport, the largest World War II federal housing project in the United States and once Oregon's second-largest city, was destroyed by a flood in 1948 that left 18,000 people homeless and forced Portland’s white residents to reckon with their racist housing practices. In observance of the anniversary of the flood, Vanport Mosaic brings moments of "memory activism" to the city each year. For this special event, though, the organization is centering Historic Old Town, which has been shaped by decades of racism and cultural erasure. Head downtown to learn about a path forward for the area: This weekend, Coming Home will include a "Unity Circle For Humanity" with performances by Portland Taiko, Süssefüsse International Folk Dance Troupe, and others, plus a walking tour of Historic Japantown, exhibits, and more.
