Juneteenth Teach-In: The Past, Present, and Future of Albina
The following description comes from the event organizer.
As the heart of Portland’s Black community for many generations, Albina was home to thriving Black-owned businesses, cultural institutions, parks and greenspaces, stretching from the banks of the Willamette River through inner North and Northeast Portland to Columbia Blvd.
Albina still exists. But decades of racist urban planning and “Urban Renewal” have changed it beyond recognition - tearing down homes and businesses, displacing hundreds of families to make way for freeways, Memorial Coliseum, and a hospital expansion that never came to fruition.
Come join the Albina Vision Trust virtually on Juneteenth as they talk about this rich history, discuss present dilemmas, and outline ways to get involved in shaping the future of Albina!
