This exhibition showcases the contributions of Lewis & Clark students over the past five years to Exquisite Gorge, a community-driven art project sponsored by the Maryhill Museum of Art in Goldendale, Washington. Based on the Surrealist conceit of an "exquisite corpse," each iteration of Exquisite Gorge involves 10 artist/community teams working on 6-foot-long artworks depicting different sections of the Columbia River. Such communities have included veterans' organizations, tribal groups, area high school students and library patrons, and other residents of the Columbia River Gorge. When completed, these sections are then assembled to create a massive, 60-foot long artwork intended to reflect the diversity of interests and concerns of the Gorge as a whole.
The Hoffman Gallery is excited to show Exquisite Gorge I and II together for the first time. Exquisite Gorge I was a woodblock print created in 2019, while Exquisite Gorge II is a fiber arts sculpture that was finished this past summer. The show highlights work on both of them by past and present Lewis & Clark students, with archival material documenting the creative process. It also includes related work by Exquisite Gorge artists such as Amanda Triplett, Francisco and Laura Bautista, and Jane Pagliarulo.
