Neil Cochrane's The Story of the Hundred Promises is embedded with "queer optimism," exploring the story of a trans sailor who has found acceptance in a magical realm. When Darragh Thorn must reconcile with his ill father, however, he seeks a strange magician who helped him long ago. Lauded writer Charlie Jane Anders described the book as "the trans fable the world needs right now."
