Title: Once on This Island: A Musical
What: A little girl is rescued from a natural disaster on a Caribbean Island by four Gods – Asaka, Agwé, Erzulie and Papa Ge. Directed by Lili-Anne Brown and based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, this mythical musical tells of Black joy and sorrow, the aftermath of colonization and isolation, and the triumph of love against all forces. Book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, music by Stephen Flaherty.

Title: Confederates
What: An enslaved woman turned Union spy and a modern-day university professor face similar struggles, despite living more than a century apart. The play by MacArthur Genius Award winner Dominique Morisseau leaps through time to trace the identities of two brilliant Black women and explores the racial and gender bias still prevalent in America today. Directed by Nataki Garrett.

Title: The Tempest
What: Banished Prospero (Tyrone Wilson) uses magic to subjugate the natives of a mystical island. With vengeance in mind, he conjures a storm to bring ashore a passing ship carrying his enemies, who find themselves at the mercy of his supernatural machinations. Director Nicholas C. Avila explore the good, the bad, and the gray areas of human nature in this classic by Shakespeare.

Title: King John
What: A corrupt monarch faces an unruly court and fights to hold onto the crown at all costs. The Shakespeare classic, as directed by Rosa Joshi, features a cast of female and non-gender binary performers and speaks directly to our current fractured political system.

Title: Revenge Song: A Vampire Cowboys Creation
What: Qui Nguyen’s irreverent take on French history lies somewhere between the realms of superheroes and comic books, and asks what it means to bust through your prescribed roles into who you are. The musical follows Julie d’Aubigny (Reina Guthrie), a queer 17th-century rule-breaking, sword-fighting, opera-singing transgressor of boundaries.
