Ottessa Moshfegh knows how to generate buzz (good and bad), and her 2022 novel Lapvona is no exception. It grapples with religion, terror, and the spirit world—you know, all that lighthearted stuff. Moshfegh's explicitly dour writing style stretches far back to a medieval fiefdom, following the young son of a village shepherd who just wants someone to love him in a freakishly cruel world where the veil is thin. For this conversation, she'll be joined by Sarah Marshall, whose podcast You're Wrong About attacks the myths embedded in modern history and pop culture. (Speaking of dourness, I recently learned all about the Donner Party through You're Wrong About—did you know Abraham Lincoln was supposed to be on the wagon train?!—and the pod has become my new addiction.)
