Science Pub Portland: Sea Otters: Bringing Oregon’s Climate Change Warriors Back
Furry sea otters seem like they'd fit right in on Oregon's rocky coastline, but they've been gone for a long time, having been hunted to near extinction at the height of the fur trade. The Elakha Alliance, a local nonprofit of tribal, conservation, and nonprofit leaders, is doing vital work to return sea otters to Oregon, but it's for stronger reasons than wanting to see them float cutely on their backs. The reintroduction of sea otters would have widespread cultural, economic, and ecological benefits. Learn more about it at this edition of Science Pub, where Elakha Alliance director and marine biologist Chanel Hason will explain why sea otters are a keystone species in the nearshore marine ecosystem.
