Djibril Diop Mambéty's stunning naturalistic portrait of '70s Senegal was inspired by the French New Wave. While two lovers plan a glamorous escape from Dakar to France, they grapple with abandoning their roots in a rapidly-changing country. Dazzling and frenetic, with jump cuts and spatial shifts inspired by African oral traditions, Touki Bouki is widely considered one of the most important films from the continent.
