Barbara Loden, once described as "the female counterpart to John Cassavetes" by The New Yorker, directed the groundbreaking independent film Wanda in 1970. You don't hear her name very often, though, perhaps due to a combination of sexism and her early death in 1980. To overlook Wanda would be a grave error—it won Best Foreign Film at the Venice Film Festival the year it was released, and it's inspired many think pieces since.
