Associated Vintners Tasting Room and Wine Bar
The local wine empire Precept Wines, which calls itself "one of the fastest-growing wine companies in the United States" and is the largest privately owned wine company in the Northwest, opened a new pop-up tasting room in the 400 Fairview building last week. This wine bar will function as a pop-up by changing up its concept each season, selling canned wines through the end of September and later switching to themes like local and sparkling wines. The company hopes the bar will allow them to test-drive new trends and gauge interest.
South Lake Union
Belltown's new CBD bar, which restaurateur Marcus Charles (of Crocodile Cafe and Local 360) recently opened inside the former space of Mama’s Mexican Kitchen, seems destined for buzz: It specializes in artisanal sparkling water laced with CBD that customers can mix with booze like Aperol and Mezcal (as The Stranger's Lester Black puts it, it's "like every major 2019 craze rolled into one"). However, the legality of this enterprise is still dubious, due to gray areas around CBD regulations. The shop sells mocktails like the "Garden Spritz" (CBD lime soda with cucumber, rosemary, and mint) and the "Jitterbug" (CBD cola, espresso, cinnamon, clove, honey), plus CBD-infused cocktails like the "The Islander" and the "Summer Spritz." Other establishments have also recently gotten in on the CBD trend: Rachel's Ginger Beer sells CBD-infused sodas and slushies, while downtown's Cafe Hitchcock briefly sold CBD "wellness lattes" before getting sent a cease-and-desist letter from the health department.
Chef David Nichols, who has previously worked as the executive chef at Queen Anne Beer Hall and Rider, opened Eight Row, his debut solo venture, in the former location of Lucia in Green Lake on August 20. The restaurant, named in tribute to Nichols's family's cherry orchard in Wenatchee, serves "Pan American" cuisine with a menu centered around the tree fruit seasons and food cultures of Central Washington. The restaurant incorporates elements from Nichols' family's farm, like the antique pruners repurposed as bar taps, and is lined with jars containing various pickles and ferments. A weekend brunch service will be available from 10-2 pm Saturday and Sunday, with dishes like porchetta with hominy, fried egg, and salsa verde; crispy sweetbreads, waffles, and spiced honey; and a Dungeness crab and avocado salad with béarnaise. There's also "a thoughtful bar program" with extensive wine and cocktail lists.
Ivar's Seafood Bar
According to a press release, the Seattle seafood favorite opened its latest location in Kirkland on August 19. Carl Taylor, director of operations for Ivar’s Seafood Bars, said the chain wanted to bring another location to the Eastside after seeing the success of their Issaquah Seafood Bar, which opened last year. The new restaurant sports the eclectic nautical decor we've come to expect of Ivar's, but adds some new sustainable features like composting, LED lighting, and efficient HVAC technology. As for the menu, it's the same classic lineup of fish and chips, chowder, and other seafood entrees, along with a few new dishes, like a grilled wild Alaskan salmon BLT and grilled Pacific true cod tacos.
Son of a Butcher
This cheekily named Korean barbecue joint recently opened in the former space of Dad's Diner in Eastlake to a mostly positive reception on Yelp. Diners can grill meats like brisket, beef tongue, and pork jowl and vegetables right at their tables, along with accompaniments like pickles, kimchi, and dipping sauces.
Feed Co. Burgers
Owners Heather and Scott Staples, who once owned Quinn’s, Sole Repair, and Restaurant Zoe and still own Uneeda Burger in Fremont, are selling their respected burger establishment in the Central District. The spot will re-open as Fusion Bites and Bar, a bar centered around cocktails, oysters, and bar snacks. A closing date for the restaurant has not yet been set, but expect things to move quickly.
The beloved downtown diner, which is known for its blend of American breakfast favorites and Filipino classics (and brilliant purple ube pancakes) and has been around in multiple locations since the 1930s, has shut its doors. A fire forced the restaurant to close last week, sooner than its expected closing date of August 31, but the restaurant re-opened with a limited menu of food and full bar so that patrons could say goodbye and is officially closed as of today, August 23. Owner Gregorio F. Rosas posted on Facebook that they are now closed until they can find a new location and asked fans to follow social media for updates, and the restaurant's page wrote a message thanking its customers for their support and saying they hope to see them again soon. We'll post updates if a new venue for the family-owned business is found.
The popular punk pizzeria and Portland import Sizzle Pie will shutter its Capitol Hill outpost (the chain's only Washington location), as well as its bar Dark Bar, on August 31. Rising "overhead and operating costs" proved too expensive for the business to continue operating in Seattle, according to a statement by the restaurant. The chain's six other locations in Oregon and Nevada will remain open.

Rubinstein Bagels coming to South Lake Union
Is Seattle's dire bagel drought over at last? After last fall's opening of Westman's Bagel and Coffee and recently launched pop-ups like Loxsmith Bagels and Beep Boop Bagels, bagel maker Andrew Rubinstein is the latest to throw his hat into the circular-dough ring. Rubinstein has been making bagels for Ethan Stowell's downtown cafe Cortina Cafe, which opened in June, and announced he plans to soon sign a lease on his own space near the Amazon Spheres in South Lake Union, though the exact location hasn't been released yet. Rubinstein will carry plain, sea salt, everything, poppy seed, sesame seed, and minced garlic bagels, as well as some more out-there varieties like gochujang and mango curry chutney. The shop is set to open by April, with an Eastside location to follow by late 2020 or early 2021.
Off the Rez food truck opening permanent cafe inside Burke Museum
Veteran Seattle food truck Off the Rez, which specializes in Native-inspired dishes and is known for its famous fry bread and Indian Tacos, is set to open a brick-and-mortar cafe inside the new Burke Museum on October 12, the museum's grand opening date. According to Seattle Met, co-owner Mark McConnell believes it to be the first native-owned brick-and-mortar restaurant in Seattle. Guests can look forward to the truck's classic menu items, plus coffee, breakfast, and dishes inspired by "indigenous and precolonial food."
Biscuit Bitch opening in White Center soon
The sassy Southern brunch chain Biscuit Bitch, which was voted a reader favorite for breakfast and brunch in The Stranger's 2019 food and drink guide and is Lizzo-approved, is set to open its highly anticipated new White Center location on September 5. The location will be the chain's fourth and its biggest yet.
Bai Tong pleads guilty to tax fraud
Seattle's popular Thai chain Bai Tong, which has locations in Capitol Hill, Tukwila, Issaquah, and Redmond, pled guilty for charges of tax fraud last Wednesday. Owners Chadillada Lapangkura and Pornchai Chaiseeha were reportedly using a type of software that cleared cash sales from their Tukwila and Redmond locations over a period of seven years, resulting in a tax loss of $299,806. All locations of the chain will remain open under the same ownership.
