A series of recent studies have shown that Seattle Public Schools have one of the worst achievement gaps between black and white students in the country, and Washington State is dead last in trying to do something about it. But cold numbers don’t often do much to spur action. That’s where Azure Savage’s new self-published oral history You Failed Us comes in. Savage, a student at Garfield High School, interviewed 40 students of color about their experiences in Seattle's schools. The book includes those interviews, plus Savage’s own reflection on the way our public schools handle race and gender in the classroom. by Rich Smith
