In a world where remounting classic shows means potentially releasing all the unexamined misogyny and racism fossilized within them back out into the world like so much fracked gas, artists seem to be choosing to direct productions that critique the bad ideas running throughout those shows, or they completely deconstruct them with a modern interpretation and reverse the power dynamics. Natascha Greenwalt and Coriolis Dance have chosen the latter option with Danses des Cygnes, which takes its name from a famous movement in the second act of Swan Lake, where four dancers link hands and dance in unison. The movement is a show of strength, a defensive posture, and a big fuck-you to the world of violent male aggression the swans have found themselves in. Greenwalt's piece will likely align with those ideas.
