Two-time National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward's latest novel, Let Us Descend, follows an enslaved woman in the antebellum South whose journey leads her through "the rice fields of the Carolinas, the slave markets of New Orleans, and into the heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation."
