“World music” is a nebulous and arguably heinous genre designation that’s too broad to truly carry any meaning whatsoever. That being said, the work of Canadian guitarist Jesse Cook would perhaps be best filed under this label. Most known for his proficiency and excellence playing the flamenco guitar, Cook has also expanded his knowledge into genres and musical traditions from cultures all over the world. After studying with musicians in seven countries on three continents, Cook’s 2017 album Beyond Borders is a blend of jazz, flamenco, R&B, and electronica that attempts to create a fluid sound between the disparate genres.
