Did you know that Leavenworth has only done the Bavarian shtick since the sixties? Before that, it was just another humble failed Washington sawmill town, until two Seattle businessmen who owned a cafe there got the idea to rip off Danish-themed Solvang, California. Anyway, Leavenworth does big business as a fake Alpine village to this day, and its month-long Maifest celebration is in full swing right now. In addition to the usual German food, drink, and dirndls, there’ll be two full days of free alphorn performances over Memorial Day weekend, by both bands and soloists. And if you’re really hardcore, you can join the four-day alphorn workshop that precedes it. BYOA. by Meg van Huygen
Other events:

May 13–15: Traditional Maifest Celebration: We’ve been doing Maifest right since 1971! This weekend will fill your entertainment card right up with Maipole dancing, Bavarian music, our annual Festzug (or Grand March) where town folk dress in their Bavarian best to welcome you to town, and so much more! We love our Bavarian traditions and this weekend is full of them.

May 21–22: Live Chainsaw Carving: Join us on Front Street where five professional chainsaw carvers will create large-scale, German-inspired carvings. These renowned carvers, local to the Pacific Northwest, will use a variety of chainsaws and other special tools to create their masterpieces. You’ll be able to watch them carve and check out the pieces they will have for sale on Saturday and Sunday.

May 27–29: Alphorn Celebration:

Join us this Memorial Day Weekend as we present our annual Alphorn Celebration. We will be joined by alphorn players from throughout North America for a weekend of alphorn concerts and special performances.
