The following description comes from the event organizer.
Greg Kucera Gallery is pleased to announce our second exhibition of works by Northwest artist, Joey Veltkamp. The show’s title, Lumberton, Wash, makes reference to Lumberton, NC, the setting for David Lynch’s movie, BLUE VELVET. The artist teases out similarities between the wholesome all-American town with a menacing underbelly depicted in the film and the Washington cities in which he has lived and worked (Spokane, Seattle, and now Bremerton.)Some of the works show displays of American flags, alone and in groups. These depictions alternate between patriotic expression and a perhaps more sinister jingoism. SELF PORTRAIT AS AMERICA shows a lone flag with rainbow colored streamers attached, while THIS GUY NAMED BUCK portrays a wind battered flag flying off the back of a Ford pickup truck. Other works mimic changeable letter signs offering free roses to men named Ben, imagine the baby blanket from Laura Palmer’s childhood, or broadcast the banal moment of car alarms going off on the ferry.
