In Toyin Ojih Odutola’s portraits, skin moves, glows, shines, and radiates. The way she renders black skin—at the beginning of her career, she worked in ballpoint pen—gives her 2-D drawings a dimension that I’ve never quite seen before. Her work is dynamic, beautiful, and challenging. The Frye recently acquired a suite of prints by the Nigerian born, New York–based artist and plans to show it in the inaugural show of the new exhibition series Recent Acquisitions. Though Odutola’s practice has expanded beyond pens and into painting and printmaking, all of her work is informed by a sense of the tactile, the topographical, the subversive. by Jas Keimig
