The following description comes from the event organizer.

Taking place at noon Seattle time in order to allow people to participate and attend from time zones and continents east and west of here will be this virtual program celebrating the publication of beloved writer Barry Lopez’s collection of posthumously published essays, Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World (Random House). Playing the lead roles here are likely to be acclaimed British writer Robert Macfarlane, along with editor/author/poet John Freeman, and others who may join in reading from and talking about the essays in this extraordinary collection. Barry Lopez made book visits to Elliott Bay for every book of his published from 1981 on through the 2019 publication of his landmark last big book, Horizon. This collection includes autobiographical pieces, reports from travels, and profound ruminations on life, death, meaning, place, purpose, forms of attention. Robert Macfarlane, whose many books on landscape and language include Underland, The Old Ways, and Lost Spells, is one of a number of prominent writers today whose sense of calling and purpose was inspired by Barry Lopez and his writing. Rebecca Solnit, with an introduction as part of this book, is certainly another. He is dearly missed - by many - now.

“To meet Barry was to feel we were entering a sphere where a language was spoken that had been fading away—the language of our inseparable connection with the natural world—yet here was a speaker who was renewing it. . . . A lonely speaker then—he must often have wondered whether anyone was truly listening—he is an essential speaker now.”—Margaret Atwood, Orion.

Co-presented with Point Reyes Books, Elliott Bay Book Company, & possible others.
