Stanley Kubrick turned Stephen King’s 1977 novel into something like a grotesquely distorted creative autobiography, the story of an obsessive perfectionist artist—Jack Nicolson’s struggling writer Jack Torrance—whose maddening caretaker residence at the vast, isolated Overlook Hotel has him reaching for the fire axe: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! The rare movie where nearly every shot is to some degree iconic, in which you can almost feel the chill of its maker’s genius.
