The chef of Sushi Kappo Tamura runs this Fremont place for izakaya—inexpensive Japanese small plates, traditionally accompanied by copious drinking. Showa calls itself "Your Japanese '80s pub," with a soundtrack loosely timed to the chef's childhood at the end of the Showa period in Japan (when the country was prosperous and Michael Jackson was still relatively normal). Showa also promises '80s-era prices, and while drinks aren't exorbitant, the small plates are quite small; getting full can get expensive, and the food's just all right (yakitori and macaroni and cheese with bacon are best). However, the second-floor space is kind of great, like a booze-filled tree house from which you may observe the marauding Fremont weekend warriors below. The calls of "WHOOOOOOOO!!!" are barely audible.
