Nothing is as it seems in this comedy-drama, starring Thomas Middleditch (of Silicon Valley fame), Diana Bang as his friendly neighbor, and Jess Weixler as his manic pixie dream girl love interest/would-be sister (it’s complicated). There are touches of magical realism in the imagery, the choice of music (oldies from the 1950s and 1960s) gives what is ultimately a heavy story a lighter feel, and Middleditch is good as an uptight nerdy dude (sound familiar?) with a depressive streak. The ending is a little cloying and perhaps a little too tidy for its own good, and the true heart of the story (a Memento-like mystery I won’t reveal) isn’t given the gravitas it deserves.
