Stranger Debates: Liz Berry vs Sarah Reyneveld
Past Event Like List This race asks the people of the Ballard area a key and pressing question: Do you want a lawyer or the director of a lawyers association to represent you in Olympia??? Weigh in TONIGHT as managing assistant attorney general Sarah Reyneveld faces off against trial lawyers association director Liz Berry in the race to fill this open seat. Both Reyneveld and Berry promise to vote for meaningful climate change legislation, police reform, bail reform, good housing bills, and better tenant protections. Both exceed the qualifications for the job. Berry claims the two disagree when it comes to laying off public employees during the recession, but Reyneveld argues she will not support cuts to public sector jobs in upcoming budget negotiations. One thing is for certain: Berry led Reyneveld by nine points in the August primary, so Reyneveld’s got some catching up to do. And she may get that opportunity next week, when a bunch of foul-mouthed Stranger reporters dressed up like maniacs run both candidates through a gauntlet of tough questions, policy battles, fantasy character-building exercises, and a totally low-rent Zoom talent show. After all that, The Stranger will poll the audience and announce a winner.

People and communities outside of the "apparatus of state power," as press materials describe it, have long created their own maps as a form of empowerment. In this online workshop on art-based experimental mapping with Wa Na Wari and Sara Zewde, bring the materials you need for your medium of choice (e.g. brushes and paint for painting, a camera for filming, etc.) and make three different scales of experimental maps: the detail, the memory, and the community.

Virtual Silent Reading Party Remind Like List
The first worldwide silent-reading party was such a huge success that we're making it weekly. Every Wednesday at 6 pm we're going to throw these parties, at least until stay-at-home is over. Attendees at the first Zoom silent-reading party included famous actors, writers, composers, artists, families, teenagers doing their homework, people staring into space listening to the music because it was just so beautiful, cats, and even one household on Orcas Island that was eating dinner and decided to broadcast the reading party as their background music. (What a brilliant idea!) It wasn't just a great party to be at. Behind the scenes, this was a roaring success as well. The Stranger brought in revenue from the reading party for the first time ever, our musician Paul Matthew Moore made ten times more on Venmo tips than he's ever made in the tip jar at the Sorrento (thank you for your generosity—he deserves it!), and hundreds of people at the party have written us emails, clamoring for more. "I’m often told of a magical TV show that aired during the even more magical era that was Seattle in the 1980s and ’90s, a time when everyone lived in a punk house and everyone sucked gay cock. That TV show was Almost Live!, and it was basically like Seattle’s SNL, and everyone loved it. While I never watched Almost Live! live, I've spent a good deal of time watching it on (gasp) the internet, and I’d like to posit that The Future Is 0—a live game show—carries on the tradition of Almost Live!’s nerdy, affable, charismatic humor. But, of course, they are not the same thing, and Seattle has sucked since Almost Live! ended and the Kingdome exploded," wrote The Stranger's Chase Burns last year. The game show will once again be at the center of this year's online benefit for On the Boards.
