Religious or not, Rosh Hashanah is as good an opportunity as any to 1) experience fun Jewish cultural traditions and 2) get a fresh start on this dumpster fire of a year. In addition to a roundup of Jewish new year specials available at local restaurants, we've compiled some virtual and socially distant in-person events to help you celebrate the High Holidays in both Portland and Seattle. See them all below.

Dacha Diner List
The Capitol Hill spot known for its craveable Eastern-European fare will serve steaming bowls of matzo ball soup for the occasion, with a choice of chicken or vegetable broth.

The "old-world authentic" New York-style Jewish deli has a High Holidays menu with dishes like whole-roasted kosher pomegranate honey za'atar chicken, grandma-style chicken soup, challah, latkes, and "Bubbie's famous slow-roasted brisket."

Schmaltzy's Deli List
This Jewish deli from Napkin Friends List owner Jonathan Silverberg offers an updated twist on a full Rosh Hashanah meal, with "herbed-out" Schmaltzy whole chicken, matzo ball soup, kale and leek kugel, roasted fall veggies, and round challah, with an optional apple honey cake for dessert. Quantities are limited, so it's recommended to pre-order. Orders are available for pickup after 1 pm on Saturday, September 19.

Trophy Cupcakes
Make your new year the sweetest it can be with Trophy Cupcakes' newest flavor, the Apples & Honey cupcake (a Madagascar vanilla cupcake filled with honeyed apples and topped with honey buttercream with an extra drizzle of honey). The cupcakes are available for pickup at Trophy's Mercer Island pop-up Past Event List on September 17 or in stores from September 17-20, or for delivery between September 17-20.

Zylberschtein's List
For Rosh Hashanah dinner, Josh Grunig's Jewish deli and bakery is reprising its popular brisket, along with fingerling potatoes, green beans, and a seasonal apple cake, available for pickup between 2-4 pm on September 18. Add on square raisin challah, Tonnemakers apples, and/or local Shipwreck honey to complete your meal. To help you break your fast for Yom Kippur Monday, Zylberschtein's is also accepting pre-orders for bagel platters, fish platters, meat platters, and cookie platters.

Mercer Island Shofar in the Park Past Event List
Chabad Mercer Island welcomes one and all to this socially distant High Holiday get-together, which will include a shofar blowing and a Tashlich ceremony (an atonement ritual performed around Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur).

Rosh Hashanah Socially Distanced Happy Hour + Dinner in a Box Past Event List
This socially distanced happy hour for young Jewish professionals will feature a box filled with dinner and "Rosh Hashanah goodies" and a brief service.

Shabbat & Rosh Hashanah Candle Lighting with ECS Past Event List
Teachers from Stroum's Early Childhood School will ring in the Jewish new year with songs, candle-lighting, and apples and honey. Make up your own plate at home and tune in to see the video streamed live.

Chabad of Queen Anne-Magnolia will bust out the ol' ram's horn in celebration of the Mitzvah of the day, Rosh Hashanah. There will also be treats for the kids and a Tashlich ceremony.

The charming bakery's High Holidays menu includes pear frangipane tartlets, "honey bee cake" (a buttermilk honey cake with boozy bourbon currants, topped with toasted almonds and butter glaze), and rugelach in two flavors (walnut apricot cinnamon or cherry chocolate cardamom).

Beetroot Market & Deli List
This modern Jewish deli has plenty of Rosh Hashanah specials, including brisket dinner, maple-glazed roasted carrots with currants, glazed honey cake, flourless chocolate tahini brownies, challah, farm salad, and whitefish salad. You can even add on Manischewitz shabbat candles for your celebration. Orders are available for pickup from 10 am-3 pm on September 18.

Elephants Deli List
Portland's original specialty foods shop has everything you need for Rosh Hashanah, including brisket, apricot chicken, challah, matzo ball soup, tsimmes, poached salmon, and latkes. The menu is available for pickup or delivery, September 17–18 and September 26-27, with curbside or in-store pickup available at the shop's NW 22nd, Corbett, and SE Central Kitchen locations. Orders must be placed by 3pm, two days prior to desired pickup or delivery time.

Chef Bonnie Morales' Soviet-inspired market and deli does Rosh Hashanah in style with challah, chopped liver, tsimmes, lekach honey cake, zestar cake, shehecheyanu salad, garden vegetables, beef tongue pastrami, and raw honey. Orders must be placed by September 17 for pickup on September 18.

Folks from Chabad of Northeast Portland will teach you how to mix, knead, shape, and bread dough for a challah loaf, just in time for Rosh Hashanah. You can join them social distancing-style in person or connect via Zoom.
