Bringing together the work of 80 artists of African descent representing a time span of almost a century, this show is a slice of what makes the Studio Museum in Harlem one of the best in the country. Working from a common heritage, the show will speak to the variety of perspectives in the Black experience, as all of the artists are radically different from one another. You’ll have the opportunity to see anything from the abstract paintings of Norman Lewis, to hand-stitched quilts by Faith Ringgold, portraits decorated with gold leaf by Barkley L. Hendricks, rhinestone-studded pieces by Mickalene Thomas, and collage self-portraits by Njideka Akunyili Crosby.
