(Old 76)
Brad Gillis and Ben Friedman, the founders of the local sustainable sandwich chain Homegrown, have opened a homey burger joint in a former gas station on Mercer Island, where Gillis grew up. They originally named it Old 76, but, as of March 2020, it's been rebranded to "HAP's Burgers & Taps" ("inspired by 'Hap' & 'Speed' Lightfoot, the brothers behind Mercer Island’s first gas & service station located on the very same corner in 1918!"). Fans of Homegrown's locally sourced ingredients can look forward to burgers with grass-fed beef, plus grilled cheese, fries, a "farm salad" with organic bibb lettuce, hand-dipped Snoqualmie ice cream shakes, soft drinks, draft beer, sparkling wine cocktails, and cider.
