Celebrated across many Asian cultures, Lunar New Year is a time of renewal, gathering with family, and enjoying festive foods. The holiday falls on February 10 this year, and 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, a zodiac sign that symbolizes power, honor, and success. To kick off a prosperous year, head to events like the 8th Annual Lunar New Year Dragon Dance and Celebration and Lan Su's Lunar New Year Lantern Viewing Evenings, and enjoy food specials like bánh tét. Check out our full Lunar New Year calendar for more ways to celebrate.

FOOD SPECIALS & POP-UPS

Baon Kainan List
Ethan and Geri Leung's Filipino cart will run a Lunar New Year special featuring scratch-made noodles and pork tocino from February 8-10—the dish is particularly special to the couple since Ethan is half-Chinese and Filipino food is highly influenced by Chinese cuisine. Plus, long noodles are traditionally eaten during the holiday since they signify longevity.

Donna’s Macarons
Owner Donna Truong was inspired by her Vietnamese and Chinese heritage to create two showstopping macaron sets: one with pandan coconut and Vietnamese coffee flavors, featuring nostalgic motifs from the Vietnamese game “Gourd, Crab, Fish, Tiger,” and another with jasmine milk tea and lychee buttercream flavors, representing the Year of the Dragon. The treats are available exclusively for delivery within a 10-mile radius of downtown Portland on Friday, February 9.
Delivery only

Either/Or List
The Vietnamese-owned cafe will celebrate Lunar New Year on Saturday, February 10. The first 50 customers of the day will get to select one of the lucky red envelopes around the cafe—each envelope contains a different amount of money.

She’ll serve the classic delicacy alongside a sampler of other festive dishes for the holiday, available at both locations for about a week during Tết.
Kerns, Northwest District

Kolectivo
The event space Kolectivo will present a community fundraiser on Saturday, February 10 with a collaborative food and drink menu provided by some of Portland's favorites, including HeyDay, Matta, Sun Rice, and Portland Cà Phê. COMMUNITY EVENTS

Oregon 2024 Lunar New Year Celebration Past Event List
The Chinese Friendship Association of Portland presents an evening of crafts, visual art, and entertainment to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Check out the art exhibit and crafts when doors open at 6:30 pm, but make sure you’re seated by 7:30 for a slate of impressive performances ranging from traditional Chinese dance to martial arts and rhythmic gymnastics. Award-winning artists will take the stage, including singer Xiaoshu Wang performing the music of Asia's first musical superstar Teresa Teng, and Long Yun, a master of the art of face-changing, which involves rapidly switching elaborate masks or makeup with a quick turn of the head or flick of a fan. SL
Keller Auditorium, Downtown (Fri Feb 2)

Chinese New Year Cultural Fair 2024 Past Event List
Fun fact: the dragon is the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac. Celebrate this symbol of strength, health, and good luck at the Chinese New Year Cultural Fair, an event presented by the Portland Chinese Times that draws thousands of attendees every year. You can check out lion, dragon, and other Chinese folk dances, as well as music, martial arts demonstrations, children's games, and more. The digitalization of the modern age means handwriting skills have degraded (we know ours has), so brush up and try your hand at a calligraphy class. SL
Oregon Convention Center, Lloyd District (Sat Feb 3)

Lunar New Year Celebration Past Event List
Bridgeport Village is hosting a Lunar New Year celebration featuring tons of activities for kids (and kids at heart). Take home a personalized gift from calligraphy artists, create a miniature dragon puppet, and learn how to fold paper cranes (or my middle school favorite, paper balloons) at the origami station. The afternoon culminates with a lion dance performance from the White Lotus Dance Troupe. SL
Bridgeport Village, Tigard (Sat Feb 3)

Lunar New Year Lantern Viewing Evenings Past Event List
Hello, Year of the Dragon! Lan Su's Lunar New Year celebration (inspired by the Lantern Festival, or Yuan Xian Jie) pulls out all the stops with its glowy hanging red lanterns—the garden's sweeping rooflines cast warm shadows, and floating lanterns glide across Lake Zither, including "four never-before-seen installations of the Four Gentlemen Floral Lanterns from China." This year, Lan Su is offering two ways to celebrate; visitors can take part in the Chinese dragon dance procession, or be among the first to explore the newly reopened Lan Su teahouse, which will serve a special tasting menu on select evenings. LC
Lan Su Chinese Garden, Old Town-Chinatown (Feb 7–Mar 2)

8th Annual Lunar New Year Dragon Dance and Celebration Past Event List
Clanging cymbals will cue the colorfully costumed dancers of local troupes International Lion Dance, White Lotus Dragon and Lion Dance, Portland Lee Association's Dragon And Lion Dance, and the Portland Trail Blazers Rip City Crew at this raucous celebration. The party will take over a block in the heart of Chinatown and Lunar New Year revelers will receive lucky red envelopes before going on the move as Portland Chinatown History Foundation’s 150-foot dragon leads a parade to the Oregon Historical Society’s Park Plaza. JW
Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, Old Town-Chinatown (Sat Feb 17)

Lunar New Year Celebration Past Event List
Pause your shopping to celebrate the Year of the Dragon at Washington Square (or risk having bad luck for the rest of the year, probably)! You can write down your heart's desire and add it to the cherry blossom wishing tree, pick up a craft kit for the kiddos, and enjoy a variety of performances from storytelling to martial arts. The festivities will be capped off with a performance from White Lotus Lion Dance, a group that has nothing to do with the darkly satirical TV show (which I think is a good thing, in this instance). SL
Washington Square Mall, Tigard (Sat Feb 17)
