COMMUNITY

Portland Silent Reading Hour Past Event List
Doesn't reading in silence sound exciting?! (It does to us.) Head to Rose City Book Pub, a cavernous bar/used bookshop with an impossibly cozy vibe, to grab a drink and chill with a tome or two. If you're fresh out of reading material, you're sure to find something interesting in the stacks.
(Rose City Book Pub, Sabin, free)

FILM

Church of Film: The Ghost Cat and The Mysterious Shamisen
Past Event List When a missing black kitty leads to a meet-cute between a samurai's daughter and a shamisen player, a love triangle ends in tragedy. The 1938 spookfest The Ghost Cat and The Mysterious Shamisen has it all—kabuki sets, eerie music, and, most importantly, a ghost cat. (If ghost cats make you say hell yes, you'll be pleased to know that they represent a whole subgenre of Japanese horror—kaibyō eiga ("monster cat") or bake neko mono ("ghost cat") films were quite popular in the mid-20th century, and you can find a whole list of 'em here.)
(The Red Fox, Humboldt, free)

Trailermania Monsters Edition on 16mm
Past Event List Self-described film geek Greg Hamilton and guest archivist Stuart McPherran lead the way on another exploration of rare 16mm movie trailers and television spots, this time with a focus on ultra-creepy classic horror and science fiction. LIVE MUSIC

Mamalarky
Past Event List Art-rock quartet Mamalarky recorded their new album, Pocket Fantasy, after traveling cross-country from LA to Atlanta and moving into a giant old house together. Georgia's subtropical climate served as inspiration for the album, resulting in sunny indie pop tunes about friendship, nature, love, and gratitude. They will be joined by New Orleans-based dream pop band Palm Sunday and the local indie rock project Babytooth.
(Polaris Hall, Humboldt, $15)

Piano Queen with Majesty of Dragula
Past Event List Portland's only live-singing piano-playing drag queen Saint Syndrome will bring you an evening filled with classic covers, comedy, and original songs, all with her signature grace and vintage elegance. (Star Theater, Old Town-Chinatown, $12)

Rontoms Sunday Sessions - October
Past Event List Classy hipster bar Rontoms recently announced five new Sunday shows for October, welcoming local acts to play the venue’s indoor space—like Maggie Morris’ solo indie rock project Sunbathe, psychedelic rock band Salo Panto, garage and psychedelia duo Tango Alpha Tango, and prog rockers Motrik. While Rontoms’ patio shows are absolutely lovely in the summer, the actual best time to go to Sunday Sessions (in this critic’s opinion) is in the cooler months. Take advantage of Rontoms’ big, cozy interior room and the chill, intimate sets that unfold in full view of East Burnside. Concertgoers can cuddle up on couches by the fireplace, order grilled cheese sandwiches, and clutch mugs of mulled wine. PORTLAND MERCURY CONTRIBUTOR JENNI MOORE
(Rontoms, Buckman, free)

Wild Powwers, Slang, and SAVAK
Past Event List Former Stranger writer Amber Cortes wrote of Wild Powwers, "Fans of guitar-driven rock will dig this trio's wily, grungy ways. Each member contributes to the band's immense sound: Jordan Gomes builds full and heavy bass lines, Lupe Flores wails on the drums like there's no tomorrow, and guitarist and vocalist Lara Hilgeman's forceful voice will rip you apart (in a good way)." Catch them performing alongside Portland supergroup Slang and Brooklyn-based indie rockers SAVAK.
(The Sïx, Sunnyside, $10-$12)
