MONDAY

FILM

Twin Peaks Mondays Past Event List
Hosted by "trans femme drag enigma" Violet Hex, this weekly series screens two episodes of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s 1990 creepy, cult-favorite show Twin Peaks every Monday at Black Water Bar, accompanied by themed drag and burlesque performances with a different special guest each time. I don't know about you, but watching talented performers embody the likenesses of Audrey Horne, Laura Palmer, the Log Lady, and other fan favorites sounds like, excuse me, a damn fine time. JB
(Black Water Bar, Irvington)

TUESDAY

LIVE MUSIC

G Flip Past Event List
It may be wrong to minimize a person's achievements and instead recognize them for a relationship they're in, but the Selling Sunset-of-it-all must be addressed! Aussie singer-songwriter/drummer G Flip is best known for their appearance on Netflix's trashiest real estate series Selling Sunset as Chrishell Stause's newfound love. The subplot was welcomed warmly with discussions about queer identity and patriarchal expectations—a big breath of fresh air for a show about selling opulent mansions and fighting with colleagues. "When I was searching for an idol as a kid, I couldn’t find someone that resonated with me," G Flip's website bio reads. "I wish I had a non-binary, gay, lead-singing drummer to watch because it would have calmed the dark, confused voices in my head that told me I didn’t belong anywhere as my authentic self." Come for the reality TV association, stay for the uplifting queer pop anthems. AV
(Star Theater, Old Town-Chinatown)

WEDNESDAY

FILM

Church of Film: FANGS! The Egyptian Rocky Horror Past Event List
If you're jonesing for a flick that's somehow more chaotic and campy than The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Church of Film has found it. Mohammed Shebl's '81 horror musical FANGS! starts on a tempestuous New Year's Eve, when two lovers find themselves in a mysterious house guarded by Dracula and his disco-loving partygoers. Sound familiar? There's a reason for that. FANGS! is a bizarre Egyptian tribute to Rocky Horror, full of masked dancing, strobe lights, recklessness, and subtle anticapitalist metatext. LC
(Clinton Street Theater, Hosford-Abernethy)

LIVE MUSIC

Hozier: Unreal Unearth Tour Past Event List
Fresh off the release of his third album, Unreal Unearth, Irish singer-songwriter Andrew Hozier-Byrne, mononymously known by his stage name Hozier, is bringing his tear-jerking blend of blues, folk, and indie rock to Moda Center for his biggest Portland show to date. Through somber piano ballads and trad-folk melodies, the album draws on his heritage with its inclusion of Gaelic lyrics and Irish mythological themes. Arrive in time to catch an opening set from pop singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham. AV
(Moda Center, Lloyd District)

Lyric & Spirit: An International Celebration of Women’s Voices Past Event List
Drawing inspiration from International Guitar Night, this inaugural tour will bring together three female vocalists from around the globe to showcase their unique talents. The evening will include performances from innovative Brazillian singer and guitarist Luísa Lacerda, renowned Indian singer and flutist Varijashree Venugopal, and multi-talented Mozambican vocalist Lenna Bahule. AV
(Patricia Reser Center for the Arts, Beaverton)

Quasi, Marisa Anderson, Dragging An Ox Through Water, and Strange Babes Past Event List
After reuniting in 2020, the indie-rock duo of PNW legends Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag) and Sam Coomes (Heatmiser) has released Breaking the Balls of History, their first album in over a decade. On songs like "Doomscrollers" and "Riots & Jokes" the band reflects on the pandemic years during which the project was recorded without falling into the cringe-worthy "lockdown album" trope. This lineup is stacked with local talent including experimental guitarist Marisa Anderson, folk project Dragging An Ox Through Water, and DJ duo Strange Babes. All proceeds will go to Mississippi Records' fire recovery fund. AV
(Polaris Hall, Humboldt)

Ratboys with Another Michael Past Event List
Now that we've all celebrated Death Cab for Cutie's 20-year-old Transatlanticism for its impeccable production, it's time to turn our ears to the future. Or at least the now. Most Transatlanticism fans agree that DCFC's former guitarist and producer Chris Walla was responsible for much of that record's magic—in an interview with Stranger Editor Rich Smith, the band's singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard even said Walla "played the studio like an instrument." Walla's days with Death Cab may be over, but he's still producing (thank goodness), and last year he quietly hunkered down in his famous Seattle studio Hall of Justice to make a record with Chicago's Ratboys. For years I had written Ratboys off as your basic Midwestern indie-kissed pop-punk outfit—good songs for road trips, lyrics that hide real feelings behind playful imagery—fun, but not much depth. The Window is a whole new Ratboys, a collection of songs that face grief and emotions head-on while experimenting with folk, vintage country, and guitar solos. Stop listening to records you loved in high school, and start listening to Ratboys. STRANGER CULTURE EDITOR MEGAN SELING
(Mississippi Studios, Boise)

READINGS & TALKS

BIPOC Reading Series- October Past Event List
This recurring reading series, which is on a "uncertainty and suspense" theme this month, centers stories by BIPOC writers, prioritizing their safety and creativity. Cohost Kyle Yoshioka will join for the first time, and featured readers include kim thompson and Philip Runia. An open mic option for BIPOC writers will be available, and the reading will be followed by a community dialogue. LC
(Literary Arts, Southwest Portland)

Fall Author Series: Casey Parks Past Event List
Though I've picked up longtime Oregonian journalist Casey Parks's memoir, Diary of a Misfit, half a dozen times at the library, I haven't read it yet—but it's not because I'm not interested. Rather, the book seems like something to savor and sit with, and I'm saving it for a time when I can give it my undivided attention. Parks now writes for the Washington Post, where she's covered abortion access, the US military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, and more; in Diary of a Misfit, she takes a similarly investigative tack, sharing her own story of coming out in the aughts in a rural Louisiana town alongside her research on small-town Louisiana singer Roy Hudgins, who was AFAB but lived as a man. LC
(Milwaukie Ledding Library, Milwaukie)

Spooky Slam! (A Bigfoot Poetry Festival Fundraiser) Past Event List
Horror poets, gather 'round, because I'm guessing that few opportunities arise to read your odes to queer icon the Babadook. This poetry slam—which is also a fundraiser for the Bigfoot Poetry Festival—invites wordsmiths to share their sonnets about candy corn, Saw traps, poltergeists, or whatever other scary stuff they've put to paper. ("Any poems that have themes of horror or touch on topics surrounding Halloween are welcome," they say.) An open mic will be followed by a two-round slam, and costumes are encouraged. LC
(Experiment PDX, Buckman)

THURSDAY

COMEDY

The Siren Theater Improv Giants Past Event List
Catch Portland's quick-on-their-feet improv experts for this evening of inventive, unscripted, no-limits fun. Longstanding comedy favorites Shelley McLendon, Tyler Quinn, Kristen Schier, Nicholas Kessler, and Jed Arkley, who are "some of the smartest, fastest, funniest, and quite frankly the tallest" comics in town, will strut their hilarious stuff on stage. The intermediate improv students from the Siren Theater's improv class will open the show, so turn up and laugh to boost their confidence. LC
(Siren Theater, Boise)

FILM

Filmed by Bike Greatest Hits Show Past Event List
Hop on two wheels for a celebration of the Filmed by Bike Festival, which has showcased bike-friendly independent films for over 20 years. This time around, Filmed by Bike has compiled a special greatest hits show (curated by artist, bike advocate, and outgoing founder and festival director Ayleen Crotty). Expect a pedal-worthy blend of award-winning flicks, crowd faves, and unexpected VHS gems pulled from Filmed by Bike Film's inaugural festival in 2003. LC
(Cinema 21, Nob Hill)

LIVE MUSIC

Duster Past Event List
Every autumn, my music taste glides between the '60s Appalachian folk revival (Jean Richie, Peggy Seeger, Hazel & Alice, etc.) to the moodiest, gloomiest indie rock of the '90s. The San Jose-born slowcore quartet Duster fits the latter bill precisely. After their initial hiatus in 2001, the band sustained a modest cult following with their two albums Stratosphere and Contemporary Movement. Then in 2020, their 1998 song "Inside Out" inexplicably boomed across the internet (seriously, the song has been streamed over 7 BILLION times on TikTok alone). It can be easy to feel territorial over the band for us humble supporters who have followed their career long before TikTok, but we must remember that these guys deserve all the success that comes their way! The band will support their new album, Remote Echos, after an opening set from the lo-fi hip-hop project Dirty Art Club. AV
(Wonder Ballroom, Eliot)

PARTIES & NIGHTLIFE

Fleetmac Wood Presents: Silver Storms Ball Past Event List
If you've ever thought "Damn, this rave isn't playing nearly enough Fleetwood Mac" then the Silver Storms Ball is for you. Twirl around (Stevie Nicks-style) to the band's iconic hits and deep cuts, remixed specifically for the chiffon-filled dance floor, by electronic DJs Roxanne Roll and Alex Oxley. If you're not a fan of the classic rock troupe, then you can go your own way! AV
(Holocene, Buckman)

READINGS & TALKS

Mary Beard Past Event List
Classicist and ancient world whiz Mary Beard will head to Portland to chat about her forthcoming book, Emperor of Rome: Ruling the Ancient Roman World, so make sure to bring your Roman Empire-obsessed boyfriend. Beard, who recently retired from her post as a classics professor at Cambridge, is a leading expert on all things Roman history—her book SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. She zeros in on the Empire's emperors in her new book, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE). LC
(Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, South Park Blocks)

Matt Kirkland in Conversation With Andy Baio Past Event List
Matt Kirkland's Dracula Daily, an "internet sensation" (The New York Times) and "coolest book club on the internet" (Fast Company), delivers Bram Stoker's classic in digestible chunks, blending the original text with reader-generated commentary, memes, artwork, comics, armchair analysis, and more. If it sounds like a delightful and weird thing to find in your email inbox, you'd be right. You can sign up here, and/or explore the phenomenon in Dracula Daily: Reading Bram Stoker's Dracula in Real Time with Commentary by the Internet, a hardcover book that compiles some of the best reader commentaries and artworks. For this conversation, Kirkland will be joined by blogger and technologist Andy Baio. LC
(Powell's Books at Cedar Hills Crossing, Beaverton)

READINGS & TALKS

Second Annual Ghost Show Past Event List
Life is short—you may as well get used to partying with the no-longer-living. Telltale, a local storytelling event for folks who like to get vulnerable (and a little weird), will "bring grief and joy together" for their second annual Ghost Show. Obviously, ghosts can represent grief, which might be a familiar feeling after the last few years. The Ghost Show will invite attendees to find some catharsis at Alberta Abbey, where you'll find a ghostly makers market, live tunes from queer punk band Sad Boy Union, comedy and story sharing, a mobile tattoo studio, photo ops, vegan sammies, and ghost-shaped treats. Dress to impress the spirits. LC
(Alberta Abbey, King)

FRIDAY

COMEDY

Eddie Izzard - The Remix: The First 35 Years Past Event List
Eddie Izzard, who recently embraced a new name (Suzy!) but retains the "Eddie Izzard" name for her public persona, will visit Portland to update and reimagine the best bits from her storied career. The Remix Tour draws from 35 years of sellout comedy shows—from '93's The Ambassadors to 2019's Wunderbar—to expand upon Izzard's wacky, surreal storytelling. (“If you’ve never seen an elephant ski, you’ve never been on acid," she once said. I'm excited to hear her elaborate.) LC
(Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, South Park Blocks)

LIVE MUSIC

Kim Petras: Feed The Beast World Tour Past Event List
Kim Petras is the pop girlie for all of us who grew up idolizing Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie on The Simple Life. Her 2022 single "Coconuts" is something you could imagine Malibu Barbie listening to in her hot pink convertible, except for sexually explicit and not appropriate for children whatsoever lyrics ("Look at these margarit-ta-tas"). Her music evokes sticky lip gloss, bedazzled thongs, and Juicy Couture tracksuits with shades of Y2K Eurodance. She's been making music for a while now (I first heard her featured on the Charli XCX banger "Unlock It"), but she really blew up with Sam Smith's viral smash "Unholy," which won her a Grammy earlier this year. Riding this wave of success, Petras will kick off your Halloweekend (she famously loves Halloween) with songs from her first two albums, Feed the Beast and Problématique. AV
(Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Lloyd District)

Men I Trust Past Event List
In 2019, Mercury writer Anna Kaplan wrote: "Men I Trust was one of the only dream-pop acts on the 2018 lineup for Tyler, the Creator’s music festival Camp Flog Gnaw, and the band later spilled that the rapper personally asked them to perform. The Canadian trio has remained independent of any record label or PR company since forming in 2014, and they produce, mix, and master their jingly melodies, smooth rhythms, and subdued vocals themselves." The dreamy indie pop outfit will take over the Roseland with tracks from the ironically titled Untourable Album. AV
(Roseland Theater, Old Town-Chinatown)

PARTIES & NIGHTLIFE

'90s Halloween Costume Glow Ball Past Event List
Embrace your inner Spice Ghoul at this nostalgic Halloween dance party featuring your favorite '90s music videos from Nirvana, TLC, Spice Girls, and more, broadcast on a giant video screen (à la MTV's TRL). Partygoers will light up the dance floor with—no, not body glitter—but free glow necklaces given away at the door. AV
(Crystal Ballroom, West End)

SATURDAY

FOOD & DRINK

Halloween Vegan Night Market Portland Past Event List
This annual event billing itself as the "largest vegan food festival in the Pacific Northwest" is back with a lineup of ghoulishly delicious plant-based fare for Halloween. Enjoy food, trick-or-treating, face painting, costume contests, tarot readings, tunes from DJ Retrobot, storytime, crafts, and a "potion station" with boozy and zero-proof beverages from Sarah Motter of Epif. JB
(The Redd on Salmon, Buckman)

HALLOWEEN

Elvira: Mistress of The Dark Past Event List
"As you are already well aware, Halloween is gay Christmas," former Stranger staff writer Matt Baume once wrote. "And Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, is its queen." I couldn't agree more, which is why this screening of Elvira: Mistress of The Dark is required viewing for those of us whose idea of Halloween fun is less "partying" and more "sitting in a dark theater with a slice of pizza." Not familiar with Elvira? Welcome. You are very late to the party, but camp legend Cassandra Peterson and I are glad you're here. This screening of one of her wickedly funny flicks will be co-hosted by Portland funnybones Elizabeth Teets and Anthony Hudson, and LA's "gender-bending goofball" Mav Viola will perform some hair-raising stand-up. LC
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District)

PARTIES & NIGHTLIFE

'80s Video Dance Attack Halloween Party Past Event List
Prepare to be haunted by big hair and shoulder pads at Video Dance Attack's annual Halloween party. Taking inspiration from MTV's iconic 120 Minutes, they'll dig into the archives for goth and new wave music videos from the likes of the Cure, Adam Ant, the Smiths, New Order, and many more. This is the perfect occasion to sport a Robert Smith costume (teased hair, eyeliner, and a button-up—easy!) AV
(Revolution Hall, Buckman)

Erotic Ball 2023 Past Event List
Emmy-nominated comedian/drag queen Sasha Scarlett will host Portland's sexiest event, taking up three floors of the Crystal Ballroom. Costumes (or stylized states of undress) are a must, so you might as well go all out in pursuit of costume contest prizes (over $5,000 in cash is up for grabs). Soul Vaccination will perform, DJ OG ONE—the official DJ of the Blazers—will keep bodies rocking, and you can admire circus performers and aerial and burlesque performances or get in on the action on the interactive fetish demonstration stage. JW
(Crystal Ballroom, West End)

PERFORMANCE

The Marriage of Figaro Past Event List
Mozart's zany comic opera, which continues the plot of The Barber of Seville, stands the test of time with cutting commentary on classism and gender norms. Expect a healthy dose of irreverence in director Fenlon Lamb's production, which takes an "empathetic comedy" approach to the adventures of Susanna, servant Figaro, and the adulterous Count Almaviva, who is that "confidence of a mediocre man" meme personified. LC
(Keller Auditorium, Downtown)

SUNDAY

FILM

Portland Latin American Film Festival Past Event List
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and support Latin cinema in one fell swoop at the Portland Latin American Film Festival, which will return again this year with seven feature flicks that can be enjoyed by Spanish, Portuguese, and English speakers. PDXLAFF continues on October 29 with Dracula, which was reshot en Español by Universal Studios right after their English production wrapped in 1931. Films will continue to screen through November 30. LC
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District)

PERFORMANCE

Not Another D&D Podcast: Dungeon Court Past Event List
Are you an orc paladin or a halfling cleric? What's your fave campaign setting? Whether you're a first-level fighter or a purple dragon knight, chances are good that you'll enjoy Not Another D&D Podcast, led by DM Brian Murphy and an adventurous co-hosting crew of D&D players. Join them for Dungeon Court, an improvised live trial that blends Judge Judy with D&D-worthy campaigns and outrageous punishments. LC
(Revolution Hall, Buckman)

MULTI-DAY

FALL & HALLOWEEN

Bella Organic Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze Past Event List
Every fall, Bella Organic Farms makes a statement with their corn maze, and this year they're targeting gun violence with "a simple message of love from a simple farmer.” Enjoy a hot cup of apple cider over a game of trivia about the maze, compete with your family and friends inside the maze to win a Clue-inspired puzzle, and hitch a free hayride over to the pumpkin patch to pick out your own gourd for carving, painting, or simply placing on your porch for max autumnal vibes. If you're a thrill seeker, stop by after dark on Fridays and Saturdays to experience their haunted corn maze. SL
(Bella Organic Pumpkin Patch & Winery, Sauvie Island, Monday-Sunday)

The Fear PDX Past Event List
The most sprawling haunted house in town hosts eleven frightening attractions—Don't Split Up (featuring saws), The Mansion (a paranormal experience), Smiley's Fun House (clowns), The Harvest (farm), The Forgotten (tombs), Rotten Pulp (toxic pumpkins), Dead End (serial killers at a construction site), Radioactive Rampage (zombies), Hazelwood Hills Asylum (it's in the name), Slasher Shed (an escape room type experience) and last but not least, Chopped (a game where one of your hands is trapped in a small guillotine). Ready to face your worst fears? Enter if you dare. SL
(The Fear PDX, Hazelwood)

The MAiZE at the Pumpkin Patch Past Event List
Shout "It's corn!!!" while exploring almost two miles of pathways through the famous MAiZE on Sauvie Island. This premier destination for fall enthusiasts pays homage to its quarter century of business with this year's "25 years" design. The maze has two parts: warm up with the "easy" section before tackling the more difficult part, and don't forget your boots—it can get muddy out there. SL
(The Pumpkin Patch, Sauvie Island, Monday-Sunday)

Spirit of Halloweentown Past Event List
Unless you've already attended Spirit of Halloweentown, you might not know that aspects of aughts-era flicks Twilight and Halloweentown were filmed in the charming lil' city of St. Helens, where the historic Old Town area looks like something straight out of, well, a Disney Channel Original Movie. When I visited last year, throngs of families dressed in fishnets and princess costumes lingered in line for churros while a giant pumpkin cackled menacingly in the distance. Later in the evening, I grabbed a beer next to a gargantuan animatronic werewolf in jorts, then attended a parade, where I was decked in the face by a Tootsie Roll hurled from a glowy-eyed black cat float. Listen, Spirit of Halloweentown is awesome, you just have to lean into it. The city transforms into a widespread themed attraction, complete with a ceremonial pumpkin lighting, circus performers, "haunted hot rods," and special guests from Twilight, Hocus Pocus 2, and Halloweentown stopping by on select dates. The parking is surprisingly ample, too. LC
(St. Helens, Saturday-Sunday)

COMMUNITY

Portland Zine Symposium Past Event List
Don't forget to bring a tote bag for this celebration of Portland's unique DIY spirit—you'll wanna fill it with self-published and handmade goodies from small letterpress shops, independent magazines, cartoonists, and more, Zinezilla style. The long-running Portland Zine Symposium is a great way to get to know local zinesters, but if you can't pop by the free affair, expect remote events to take place online throughout the weekend. LC
(PSU's Smith Memorial Student Union, South Park Blocks, Saturday-Sunday)

FILM

Claudio Simonetti's Goblin with Demons Past Event List
The record label, film series, and "guerrilla action group" Wyrd War will drag out their cinema cauldron again for a screening of Lamberto Bava's '85 horror epic Demons just in time for All Hallows' Eve. Italian prog-rock ghouls Goblin, led by keyboardist Claudio Simonetti, will provide a live score for the lurid, bloody masterpiece. The flick is equal parts sinister, supernatural, and slick, checking off all my ideal horror film boxes, like "isolated Berlin movie theater," "Nostradamus's grave," and "getaway motorcycle." Plus, Portland-born scream queen Geretta Geretta makes an appearance in the film. Sick! Stick around after the screening for a full-length concert of haunting tunes spanning Goblin's whole catalog. LC
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, Tuesday-Wednesday)

In the Mouth of Movie Madness Past Event List
If there's any institution I trust to curate the perfect mix of Halloween horror films, it's physical media mainstay Movie Madness, which will play host to a "back-to-back horror film spectacular" in its cozy on-site Miniplex. Sure, it's $35, but you get to watch four scary flicks in a row, which means each one is a mere $8.75. (I call that Halloween math, and in my opinion, it adds up to a decent deal.) If you're like, "How am I supposed to stay awake for that??" The answer is candy, and Movie Madness will have you covered with a snack and beverage stand all night long. LC
(Movie Madness, Sunnyside, Friday-Saturday)

Killers of The Flower Moon Past Event List
The calendar is inching closer to Oscar season, and with it will come a film that already rivals the chatter of this summer's Barbie and Oppenheimer, if that's even possible. Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, which the Guardian described as an "epic of creeping, existential horror about the birth of the American century," follows the true story of quasi-genocidal serial killings that impacted Oklahoma's Osage tribal community in the '20s. The film takes a "show, don't tell" approach to illustrating the epidemic of violence against Native people in the United States. Calling it now: Based on the trailer alone, Killers of the Flower Moon blends Western sensibilities, true crime, and the macabre in an enthralling way that'll land each and every butt in a theater seat. LC
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, Monday-Sunday)

FOOD & DRINK

Black Lagoon Halloween Bar Pop-Up Past Event List
Break out your best goth finery: The "whimsical but moody" cocktail bar Dirty Pretty is hosting Black Lagoon, a ghostly Halloween-themed experience proclaimed "Canada's Best Pop-Up Bar" by Canada's 100 Best in 2022. The experience, dreamed up by bartenders Erin Hayes and Kelsey Ramage in New Orleans in 2019, features dungeon-esque decor and deliciously morbid libations like the "Hellfire Fizz" (Lot 40 Dark Oak Rye Whiskey with carrot, turmeric, fresh lemon, Lustau Amontillado, Greek yogurt, Bitter Queens Caribbean spice bitters, absinthe, and seltzer), the "Book of Blood" (a take on the classic margarita with Montelobos Mezcal, Giffard Pimente D’Espellette, fresh beet, fresh lime juice, miso falernum, and absinthe), and the "Death Rattle" (Lustau Brandy, Lustau Amontillado Sherry, pineapple and lime juice, spiced oat orgeat, saline, and Bitter Queens Caribbean spice bitters).
(Dirty Pretty, Buckman, Monday-Sunday)

"You're Dead to Me" Halloween Pop-Up Bar Past Event List
Rogue Ales and Spirits is the mastermind behind this spine-chilling Halloween pop-up at Dead Guy Bar, featuring 13 petrifying potables like "The Cujo" (a riff on the classic New York Sour with Dead Guy Whiskey Cabernet Cask), "The Basic Dude" (a pumpkin spice take on the White Russian with Bayfront Vodka, coffee liqueur, and pumpkin spice cream), and the "Hell Fire" (smoky mezcal, grapefruit, and Rogue Farmhouse Absinthe). To eat, there's a food menu of sinister specials like the Nightmare Before Christmas-inspired "Oogie Boogie Burger," featuring guacamole, bacon, a black bun, and creepy olive eyes. JB
(Dead Guy Bar (Rogue Hall), South Park Blocks, Monday-Sunday)

LIVE MUSIC

Angel Olsen Past Event List
While it's often hard for me to emotionally connect with contemporary indie rock, Angel Olsen's heartwrenching vocals bring me to tears almost every time I hear them. Her voice, which has been compared to artists like Emmylou Harris and Mildred Bailey, seesaws from deep restraint to free-flowing belts, sometimes in a single breath. Olsen will return to Portland for two nights with tracks from her new stripped-down EP Forever Means and country-tinged 2022 album Big Time. Don't miss opening sets from acclaimed folk artist/poet Kara Jackson (night one) and singer-songwriter Allegra Krieger (night two). AV
(Revolution Hall, Buckman, Tuesday-Wednesday)

PERFORMANCE

Fright Night: A Halloween Circus Past Event List
If your ideal Halloween celebration includes an aerial circus act, well, you're in luck: this evening of impressive flips and spins will return to Lincoln Performance Hall for its 11th year to pay tribute to classic horror movies. Set within a long-gone video rental spot, Night Flight Aerial’s Fright Night: A Halloween Circus follows a store employee as he battles contorting demigorgons, possessed dolls, and blood-soaked prom queens on aerial silks. LC
(PSU Lincoln Performance Hall, South Park Blocks, Thursday-Sunday)

HAIR Past Event List
If you're in search of a genre-defining musical, look no further than HAIR, which served to radicalize a whole generation when it hit Broadway in 1968. It's got drugs, nudity, free love, and notes of psychedelia, but beyond all the far-out energy, its songs also became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War movement. This fresh production serves as a reminder that history repeats itself, and we can still use art as a force for change. What could be groovier than that? LC
(Portland Center Stage, Pearl District, Wednesday–Sunday)

Roald Dahl's Matilda: The Musical Past Event List
If Danny DeVito's '96 fantastical comedy Matilda is one of your core childhood memories (or maybe you're slightly more old school and prefer the '88 Roald Dahl book—I'll go to bat for either), levitate yourself over to Portland Playhouse for this musical adaptation. You know the story already: a big-brained, precocious misfit who's stuck with an anti-intellectual family and a straight-up psychotic principal, Miss Trunchbull, learns to navigate the mess with her teacher, Miss Honey, and a certain magical ability on her side. I'm hoping to see chalk fly through the air. LC
(Portland Playhouse, King, Wednesday-Sunday)

Young Frankenstein Past Event List
Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced "Fronk-en-steen"), grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, inherits some frankly creepy real estate in Transylvania, where he meets the hunchbacked Igor and finds himself filling the shoes of his weirdo scientist predecessor. You guessed it—this production is a musical rendition of Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein, adapted by the creators of Broadway hit The Producers. Frankie's monster escapes again in this one, but it unleashes more hilarity than terror, so if you're looking for something on the tamer side of the scare spectrum this October, you've found your night out. LC
(Winningstad Theatre, South Park Blocks, Thursday-Sunday)

VISUAL ART

Amanda Ross-Ho: ICE TIME Past Event List
I was lucky enough to catch Los Angeles-based artist and one-time competitive figure skater Amanda Ross-Ho's performance at the Lloyd Center ice rink on Converge 45's opening weekend. The performance, which felt inextricably linked to the legacy of a certain infamous Olympian who learned to skate at Lloyd, saw Ross-Ho skate in a meditative figure eight formation. Her solo exhibition ICE TIME expands on this meditation with a further developed sense of repetition and muscle memory. LC
(ILY2, Pearl District, Wednesday–Saturday; closing)

Amjad Faur: A Spell for Letting Go Past Event List
Amjad Faur's precise, elaborately assembled photographs are created with a large-format camera, subverting the immediacy of iPhone snapshots and digital manipulation in favor of unedited, deliberate looking. (Each of his images can take weeks or months to create.) As a descendant of Scottish American and Palestinian heritage, Faur investigates his dual identities through varying, and sometimes unexpected themes: Renaissance paintings, Middle Eastern geo-political conflicts, "objects of armor and violence," fantasy art, Victorian Spiritualism, and more. Viewing his photographs as a form of spell-casting, Faur leans into the complexity of the process; the images seen in A Spell for Letting Go include traditional chainmail woven by the artist. LC
(PDX CONTEMPORARY ART, Slabtown, Tuesday–Saturday; closing)

Innerbloom Past Event List
A new exhibition of paintings centered on transitions made during an intense period of grief fit surely into Nationale’s front room. In his signature loose and adaptive approach, Ty Ennis moves through this new series of portraits and still lifes with hues of pewter, steel, and charcoal alongside blushy rose quartz pinks, and pops of scarlet, azure, and mossy greens. AG (Every Thursday–Monday, through October 29, 12–6 pm, Nationale, Buckman)

Portland TextileX Month Past Event List
Exploring a "mixed identities" theme this year, Portland TextileX Month (PTXM) is back to examine everything from myths and rituals to migration and resistance through diverse textile exhibitions and workshops. We're tied up in knots about Salvadoran American textile artist Orquidia Violeta's Guardian Spirit Series, Well Well Projects' Emotions of Home, Carnation Contemporary's Wild Peninsula: Color & Sound in North Portland, and costume designer Fuschia Lin's mask-making workshop, but you can find a full list of the month's events here. LC
(Every day, through October 31)

The Rose Past Event List
If you'd asked me to name some subversive feminist acts before reading about The Rose, "collaging" wouldn't have topped my list. But curator Justine Kurland's new group exhibition (housed in lumber room's airy space) has effectively changed my mind—collage is badass, representing all things transformative and revitalizing. So get into it! A lush garden of artists featured in The Rose seems to agree with me. The show features over 40 creators, including local recognizables like Jessica Jackson Hutchins and Bean Gilsdorf alongside major art stars Ruth Asawa, Wendy Red Star, and Francesca Woodman. LC
(lumber room, Pearl District, Friday-Saturday; closing)

Throughlines: Connections in the Collection Remind List
Pulling directly from the museum's collections, Throughlines: Connections in the Collection explores "a range of artistic innovation" from across different geographies, cultures, and time periods. Sound vague? Maybe a little bit! But PAM's curators have arranged the exhibition's artworks into playful process- and material-based groupings organized under a few loose themes: portraiture and representation, views of the land and environment, and unexpected uses of imagery, ephemeral materials, and color. The format should serve as a jumping-off point for some fun convos about the artistic process. I'm excited to see Dinh Q. Lê's high-definition chromogenic prints and a rare sculpture from Kehinde Wiley's The World Stage series. The exhibition should also get visitors jazzed for the museum's forthcoming Mark Rothko Pavilion, which will offer "an elegant and fluid connection between [the museum's] two buildings." (They’re currently connected underground via stairs and elevators.) The multi-year expansion and renovation project will make the museum more accessible and inclusive. Cool! LC

Wild Peninsula: Color and Sound in North Portland Past Event List
If you've ever bopped around St. Johns, you may have noticed the neighborhood's plentiful "edge-of-wild spaces." Longtime residents Carolyn Hazel Drake, Michael Brooks, and Eric Jordan have taken note of them, too, finding resonance with the peninsula's landscape and exploring areas like the Baltimore Woods, Chimney Park, Smith & Bybee Wetlands, the Columbia Slough, and the St. Johns Prairie on daily walks. In Wild Peninsula: Color and Sound in North Portland, the trio reflects on the "strange interplay of nature, industry, preservation, disuse, and restoration" in the area through woven tapestries, soundscapes, and hand-appliqued textiles.
