Deadbird / Can Anybody Help Me Hold This Body
In the film version of their live performance that was slated to premiere in NYC last spring, choreographer Devynn Emory creates a space for grieving, using their own body as a "spirit medium" that serves to reflect on nursing during the COVID-19 crisis (Emory is a registered nurse in real life). Inspired in part by the medical mannequins that Emory encountered in nursing school, the film envisions "an ideal care team for a body who’s passing," the artist told the New York Times. It's being presented online courtesy of Danspace Project, accompanied by a physical altar honoring those lost to the virus, created by artist Maya Vivas (which you can visit at PICA’s Back Lot on NE San Rafael).
