Observed in the summertime, Obon Fest is a Japanese/Japanese American festival that pays tribute to one's ancestors: "In their honor, lanterns are hung, Bon Odori (Obon dance) is performed, memorial visits are made, and food is offered at home butsudans (altars) and temples." The hosts of Portland's Obon Fest emphasize that their Bon Odori is not a performance, but rather a joyous community dance where everyone is welcome.
