Kenji Mizoguchi’s 1953 masterpiece is presented here in 35mm. The film, adapted from two 18th-century ghost stories, follows a pair of brothers whose greed, envy, and desires lead to dangerous obsessions in Sengoku-era wartime. Ugetsu is considered a masterwork from Japan's golden age of film, and was deemed "subtle, violent yet magical" by the late film critic Pauline Kael.
