Last Year at Marienbad
You will never make sense of this 1961 film. It is a maze without a center. You enter the work and simply marvel at the way director Alain Resnais has arranged each section of the maze with an architect’s eye for shapes, lines, and the positions of objects. If you think there’s a crime in all of this that needs to be solved, kill that thought right away. You must simply exist within the film’s moments in much the same way a fly exists in a room in one of those novels by Alain Robbe-Grillet.
