FRIDAY

FILM

A Boy and His Dog
Past Event List It's the far-off year of 2024, and the American southwest has become a desolate post-nuclear desert. Exceptionally horny Vic (played by Don Johnson of Miami Vice fame) roams the land with his telepathic dog, Blood, before being seduced into an underground community where he discovers a mechanized procreation operation. I'll stop there, but rest assured that it gets even weirder. This 1975 black comedy sci-fi was called "dim-witted" by Gene Siskel, but purportedly inspired George Miller's later Mad Max films. A portion of the screening's proceeds will be donated to Anarchist Black Cross groups in Europe providing transport and medical supplies to Ukraine.
(Clinton Street Theater, Hosford-Abernethy, $6)

Scanners
Past Event List It's telepath-vs-telepath in this freaky sci-fi world, and some born with the strange power are hellbent on world domination. Rife with Cronenberg's distinctive gross-out body horror, Scanners might make Dr. Pimple Popper wince. But despite (or perhaps because of) the gruesome bits, this extraordinarily provocative tale was Cronenberg's first smash hit in the United States.
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $8-$10)

Threads Past Event List
This dark, apocalyptic war story was released at the height of the Cold War in 1984, following two families amid a US-Soviet Union nuclear conflict. Shot on a meager budget, yet widely hailed as a masterpiece, Threads was the first film of its kind to depict a nuclear winter. It went on to win four BAFTA awards.
(Clinton Street Theater, Hosford-Abernethy, $8)
