FRIDAY

FILM

Super Mario Bros in 35mm
Past Event List Indulge in some blissful absurdity on Friday night—it's what you deserve. Mondo Trasho will roll out a 35mm presentation of Super Mario Bros (the 1993 flick, not the new release), which sees Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as overall-wearing NYC plumbers who enter an alternate dimension to rescue an archaeology student. Do not underestimate how weird this film is. Okay, it was a critical and commercial disaster, and Roger Ebert deemed it “a complete waste of time and money," but it was directed by husband-and-wife cyberpunk masterminds Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. (They co-created Max Headroom and directed music vids for Talking Heads and Elvis Costello.) So, it's gotta be kinda cool, right? LC
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $8-$10)

FOOD & DRINK

Umbrella Jimmy Can Release & Tasting Past Event List
Usher in rosé season with McMenamins' Umbrella Jimmy Rosé, now available in cans with old-timey illustrations (ideal for tossing into your cooler for the beach or a picnic). At this event, you can be among the first to taste it and take some home for later.
(McMenamins 23rd Avenue Bottle Shop, Northwest District)

LIVE MUSIC

Friends of Noise Presents: Mauve, Femme Cell, Mr. Dinkles, As Above, and School Project Past Event List
Help local nonprofit  Friends of Noise continue to provide support and resources for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ youth within Portland’s music community by grabbing tickets to this hard-hitting benefit concert featuring PNW-based punk bands Mauve, Femme Cell, Mr. Dinkles, As Above, and School Project. AV
(JaJa PDX, Central Eastside, $10-$12)

PARTIES & NIGHTLIFE

'80s New Wave Video Dance Attack
Past Event List Portland’s longest-running video dance night is digging into the archives for a special new wave edition featuring artists like Depeche Mode, the Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees, and New Order. Think MTV's iconic video series 120Minutes, but played in a dance club surrounded by fellow goths, jangle poppers, and punks. AV
(Polaris Hall, Humboldt, $12)

SATURDAY

COMMUNITY

Archaeology Roadshow Past Event List
I didn't have cable TV as a kid, so instead, I parked it in front of our old rabbit-eared television set and found myself enthralled by the quiet magnetism that was PBS's Antiques Roadshow. This is not quite the same thing, but I'm fairly certain it appeals to the same demographic (aka nerds, aka me). The free, fam-friendly 11th annual Archaeology Roadshow, which focuses on the archaeology of transportation, invites visitors to bring their own ancient objects—so whatever stone tools, pottery, and animal bones you have lying around—for expert interpretation. (Unlike Antiques Roadshow, financial appraisal won't be offered.) The event will also feature "dozens of presentations and activities" led by real-deal archaeologists and heritage specialists from across the region and beyond. LC
(PSU's Hoffman Hall, Southwest Portland, free)

FESTIVALS

St. Johns Bizarre
Past Event List Portland has plenty of spring/summertime festivals, but few are as cheap (free!) and jam-packed with talent as the St. Johns Bizarre. Now in its 14th year, the Bizarre is a treasure chest of entertainment, crafts, and food all centered around the annual St. Johns Parade. While you happily chow down on eats from local food vendors, don’t miss out on the live music, which includes highlights like Open Mike Eagle, Eyelids, J. Graves, Lo Fives, and plenty more! AV
(St. Johns Plaza, St. Johns, free)

FILM

The Night of the Hunter Past Event List
Night of the Hunter, the second installment in celebrated film programmer Eliot Lavine's First Films from the Famous series, captures the simmering horror of an old fairy tale with an eerie sense of humor. Director Charles Laughton's psychological masterwork follows a batshit traveling preacher with knuckle tattoos who unleashes hell on a sensitive widow and her children. The expressionist flick, which stars film noir player Robert Mitchum and iconic Hollywood mainstay Lillian Gish, is a must-see for any Letterboxd member—it continued to influence cinema auteurs like the Coen brothers and Spike Lee for decades after its release. LC
(Cinema 21, Nob Hill, $9)

LIVE MUSIC

Rachel Baiman
Past Event List If you're of 21st-century Americana ladies like Gillian Welch and Iris DeMent, listen up! Rachel Baiman combines the timeless nature of traditional folk music with contemporary topics, which can be heard on her latest album Common Nation of Sorrow. Employing finger-picked guitars and fiddles, Baiman tells stories of American capitalism and the destruction it causes with songs like "Bad Debt" and "Ways of the World." She will support the album after an opening set from kindred folk gem Malachi Graham. AV
(Polaris Hall, Humboldt, $15)

PARTIES & NIGHTLIFE

Glam Rock Past Event List
The queer-centered bash Glam Rock is back for the first time since 2019 with more jaw-dropping collaborations between local rock bands and drag performers. Witness as queens like Babylon Brooks, Carmen Kiara Cortez, Ellie LeBlunt, and Romie Romak rock out to the music of "pop party rock band" Creature Party, high energy punks the Wild Jumps, and pop punk project New Here. Come prepared for plenty of glitter, feather boas, and air guitars. AV
(The World Famous Kenton Club, Kenton, $10)

Tropitaal 10-Year Anniversary Past Event List
Resident DJs Anjali and The Incredible Kid will party extra hard in honor of the 10th anniversary of Tropitaal, thumping out their signature blend of Latin American tropical sounds and rhythms from India. Plus, a special occasion means special guests! DJ Karma Rivera will spin a set of pop-flavored hip-hop, melodic trap, and Latin-infused dance music, and rapper JULIMAR will hop on the mic. AV
(Goodfoot, Kerns, $15)

SHOPPING

Mother's Day Market Past Event List
Forgot to secure a Mother's Day present? Swing by this market featuring local goods such as fresh flowers, Pioneer Farms honey, jewelry, and wine.
(Lolati Wines, Sherwood)

Multnomah County Master Gardener Association's Incredible Edibles Plant Sale Past Event List
The Multnomah County Master Gardener Association will present their 10th annual Incredible Edibles plant sale, which invites attendees to "grow [their] own, from seedlings to supper." (Pro tip: it's a lot easier to grow from starts than from seed, especially when the starts have been babied by trustworthy master gardeners.) Order online for quick pick-up or browse on-site, where you'll find knowledgable volunteers, a prolific pepper-growing workshop, old-timey jams by a string band, and more. Heirloom and hybrid veggie, fruit, herb, and flower starts will be offered (including some with fantastic names like "Mortgage Lifter"), with proceeds benefiting OSU's science-based garden education. LC
(Westminster Presbyterian Church, Irvington, free)

Spectrum Spring Art Market Past Event List
Show off your pride (and gear up for Pride Month!) with some fresh duds and housewares at this LGBTQ2SIA+ pop-up market, where local artists hawking ceramics, art, textiles, apparel, jewelry, and accessories will celebrate spring by keeping things rainbow-hued and sparkly at ADX (Art Design Xchange). This will be the last market of the season at ADX, so don't miss the chance to check out the "creative hub," which offers membership-based studio space, a wood shop, classes, and more; you'll also find local breweries within walking distance and the Lil America food pod next door. LC
(ADX, Buckman, free)

Spring Fling Pop-Up Past Event List
Nonprofit community sewing studio Sincere Studio will join up with Sonny's House of Tattoos and Treasures and Outlet PDX, illustrator/educator Kate Bingaman-Burt's risograph print shop and zine library, for this springy celebration. Local artists will sling bright, graphic wares, and deals and prizes will be up for grabs. Stroll down Sandy to support local business—afterward, you can snag pizza or coffee at the Zipper a block away. LC
(Sonny's House of Tattoos and Treasures, Kerns, free)

SUNDAY

FILM

Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai Du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles Past Event List
If you've come across the nameJeanne Dielman on your Twitter feed lately, it's for good reason—Chantal Akerman's 1975 drama was awarded the number one slot on Sight & Sound's 2022 critics' poll of the greatest films of all time. Conquering both Vertigo and Citizen Kane for the first time in 60 years, Jeanne Dielman 23, Quai Du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles is the only film directed by a woman to ever reach a top ten position in the poll. The flick is the perfect choice for moms who tend toward the "arthouse cinema" end of the interest spectrum. Why not carve out a mere three-and-a-half hour to bask in its avant-garde, fiercely feminist glory together? LC (Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $8-$10)

LIVE MUSIC

Ganser, Black Ends, and Hollow Sidewalks Past Event List
Chicago-based art-rock quartet Ganser’s high-energy album, Just Look at That Sky made waves when it was released a few years ago, receiving praise from lauded publications like Vice, Rolling Stone, and Paste. Despite being recorded before the pandemic, the album’s poignant sentiments of dark humor, anguish, and rage offer a bleak yet cathartic time capsule of 2020. Now, the band will return to Portland to support their titled EP, Nothing You Do Matters, alongside local post-punk band Hollow Sidewalks. AV
(Mississippi Studios, Boise, $15)

LANNDS
Past Event List The music of Florida-based duo LANNDS is vibey, breezy, and dreamy, with just the right amount of gloom. It sounds like loneliness on a summer day or crying in the bathtub with an expensive facemask on. Using repetition to hammer in the emotional power of simple phrases (my favorite refrain is "where lay down" from their song "Blueprint"), Rania Woodard's delicate vocals reminisce on relationships and personal changes atop Brian Squillace's glittering electronics. Give their latest album Music For The Future a listen so you can sing along at the show! AV
(Doug Fir Lounge, Buckman, $15)

READINGS & TALKS

Hernan Diaz
Past Event List Pulitzer Prize finalist, PEN/Faulkner Award winner, and beloved author Hernan Diaz will share his buzzy novel, Trust, described as a "kaleidoscope of capitalism run amok in the early 20th century" by Publisher's Weekly and longlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize.
(Powell's City of Books, Pearl District, free)

MULTI-DAY

FESTIVALS

Lilac Days
Past Event List Lilacs: They're not just purple anymore. Take in the intoxicating scent of the multi-hued beauties at Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens, a National Historic Site about an hour north of Portland. Named after German immigrant-turned-Washingtonian Hulda Klager, the garden farmhouse and gift shop has reopened after a pandemic closure with lilac plants and other floral goodies for sale. The event even promises a "new barn museum with exhibits [on the theme of] Hats from the Past." This has your mom's name written all over it. LC
(Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens, Woodland, $5, Friday-Sunday)

FILM

To Die For
Past Event List Gus Van Sant's delectably bitchy dark comedy To Die For stars Nicole Kidman as Suzanne, a small-town weather reporter whose dreams of glamorous news anchor stardom are held back by her middle-class husband, who works for his family's restaurant. (How dare he.) Naturally, Suzanne decides to enlist a high school boy (Joaquin Phoenix) to kill her hubby, but everything backfires when videotape, cocaine, mafia ties, and figure skating enter the picture. To Die For was released during the Basic Instinct era of sexy blonde murderers and neo-noir aesthetics; if you liked Park Chan-wook's Decision to Leave, you'll probably dig this. LC
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $8-$10, Saturday-Sunday)

SHOPPING

Unique Markets Past Event List
This stylish market of 150 emerging Portland brands and designers would be a sweet spot to walk off weekend brunch with your mama. Peruse trendy wares from up-and-coming brands like yello, Carry Courage, and HARARA, gulp down complimentary wine tasters and bottles of Topo Chico, customize your own tote bag, and hop in the photo booth to cement your cute memories. There are even VIP tickets with mom-approved perks, including drinks from Straightaway Cocktails and a gold-plated necklace, if you wanna #treatyourself (or #treatmom). LC
(Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Lloyd District, General admission $10/VIP admission $40, Saturday-Sunday)

VISUAL ART

Angela Anh Nguyen: How We Hegemony Past Event List
LA-based textile artist Angela Anh Nguyen will showcase her graphic tufted rugs in How We Hegemony, the artist's first solo exhibition. Book an appointment to scope out the subtly comical works, which "document the reaching effects of authority" with bold, head-on sincerity.
(One Grand Gallery, Buckman, free, Friday-Sunday)

Between Two Points Exhibition Past Event List
Housed within the Ellen Browning cohousing building, new-ish gallery space The Lobby may be easily missed—but if you're into viewing artworks ordinarily reserved for major museums, don't sleep on it. Organized by Austin-based curator Sima Familant from building owner Molly McCabe’s personal art collection, the gallery's newest exhibition, Between Two Points, includes works by prominent art stars like Carmen Herrera, Maya Lin, and Jenny Holzer. (Previously, the gallery has showcased works by David Hockney and Andy Warhol.) Drop by to view pieces that spotlight the use of line in art and its "numerous interpretations and meanings." LC
(Ellen Browning Building, Richmond, free, Friday-Saturday)

chimaera.site/afk Past Event List
Fanciers of monsters, cyborgs, dystopias, and glitchy madness may already be lurking at the Lloyd Center Hot Topic, but they should make their way next door, where chimæra.site/afk, a "creative community space," has activated an empty storefront. Organized by Daelyn Lambi, a current MA/MFA candidate at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, the temporary space will host an art exhibition, market, public workshops, and music, drag, and dance performances. Geared toward those considering "chimeric qualities of hybridity and (im)possibility" (who isn't?!), chimæra.site/afk's jam-packed schedule boasts a butoh performance, a knitwear pop-up, a dance party, and much more throughout the weekend. Bonus: you can hit the ice rink afterward. LC
(Lloyd Center, Lloyd District, free, Friday-Sunday)
