This Week In Portland Food News: New Jersey Tavern-Style Pizza, "Thiccflurries," and Sushi

This week's batch of food news includes a new sports bar serving tavern-style pizza, a donburi bowl destination, and two new sushi spots. Plus, read about some exciting upcoming openings and Ice Queen's vegan "thiccflurries." For more ideas, check out our food and drink guide.


Donburi Factory List
This fast-casual spot specializing in donburi bowls debuted in Tigard in late January, with options like spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and chicken teriyaki.

Hopscotch List
Aaron Barnes, the owner of Scholar List and The 1905 List , launched this new sports bar serving New Jersey-style tavern pizza, along with nachos, burgers, wings, and other pub grub, on Wednesday.

Kaede List
Chef-owner Izumi Uehara and executive sushi chef Shinji Uehara unveiled this sushi bar in Sellwood on January 20, with a menu of nigiri, sashimi, sushi rolls, and dishes like scallop kushikatsu and tuna tataki, in addition to a selection of sake. The restaurant has paused takeout operations for the time being and is currently available for dine-in only. 

SEA Crab House List
Seafood boil spots like Bag O' Crab List and Captain's Choice List have been popping up around town lately. The latest newcomer joining the trend is SEA Crab House, which soft opens a new location in Beaverton's West End district today, followed by a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 9. The business also plans to open locations in Seattle, Portland, Bellevue, and Tacoma this year.

Shizuku by Chef Naoko List
Rejoice: This acclaimed Japanese spot, which has been on hiatus since early last summer, has reopened for limited takeout, including bento boxes and onigiri.


Grape Ape List
Industry alum Morgan Schick plans to open this laidback natural wine bar and bottle shop on Southeast Yamhill this spring.

Workshop List
This upcoming bar from Fermenter List chef-owner Aaron Adams is set to open on February 18, with a menu of plant-based Cuban bites, small plates, desserts, and cocktails.

Yaowarat List
Eem List co-founder and James Beard Award finalist Akkapong Earl Ninsom plans to debut this restaurant inspired by Bangkok's bustling Chinatown neighborhood later this year. The project's location has not yet been announced.


Beaux Berry List
The ice cream cart known for its handmade scoops and New Zealand-style swirls will close after this summer and is looking for a buyer.

Oak & Olive Restaurant List
Eater Portland reports that this modern Italian bistro appears to have closed permanently.

Sisters of the Road List
The nonprofit cafe, which provides meals and opportunities for those in need, recently closed its Old Town-Chinatown location due to difficulties with mold and asbestos, leadership, and staff shortages and hopes to reopen at a new TBD location in Old Town.

Meet the Winemaker: Kate Norris of Division Winemaking Co. & Gamine Past Event List
Kate Norris of the urban winery Division Winemaking Co. and the Rhone-inspired winemaking project Gamine will pour flights of her signature "delicious wines made for good times," paired with ricotta and marmalade crostini from Sebastiano's Deli.

National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day Past Event List
National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day might just be the best holiday you're not celebrating—yet. Kate's Ice Cream will sling warm mochi waffles from HeyDay (including buttery maple syrup waffles and chocolate chip whipped cream waffles) alongside ice cream, toppings, and peanut butter and vanilla affogatos, plus free drip coffee from Deadstock.

For the Love of Shakespeare Past Event List
Feast on dishes like romesco baked snapper, chicken saltimbocca, and eggplant parmesan and sip wine as you enjoy scenes from some of the Bard's most well-known plays, including "Romeo & Juliet," "Much Ado About Nothing," "Antony & Cleopatra," "As You Like It," "Macbeth," and "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Oregon Truffle Festival Past Event List
The 18th edition of the Oregon Truffle Festival presents a series of events dedicated to the prized delicacy. This weekend's lineup includes a truffles and bubbles sparkling wine dinner at Domaine Willamette and a feast in the Chehalem Mountains (now sold out).

Winter Waters x Veganizer x Feral: When I Seaweed, I Smoke It Past Event List
At this event produced by Veganizer in collaboration with Blue Evolution and Oregon Seaweed's Winter Waters, Feral chefs Ryan Koger and August Winningham will dish up a dinner showcasing the versatility of seaweed, in preparations such as seaweed bagna cauda, dashi, masa dumplings and squash, charred cabbage with beurre blanc, and braised apples with custard and crumble. Nan Chaison of Mestizo will provide beverages, and 10% of proceeds will benefit Oregon Kelp Alliance.

Drift Boat Pop-Up Brunch Past Event List
Spokane-based chef and James Beard Award semifinalist Jeremy Hansen, who has worked at the Michelin-starred Cafe Gray in New York, will serve a preview of his upcoming breakfast and brunch spot Drift Boat, which will focus on produce and seafood. Bantam Tavern bar manager Amy Tegge will provide a special cocktail menu to complement the specials.

Ice Queen List
The vegan frozen treat shop is now offering "Thiccflurries," a thick, creamy take on the McDonald's McFlurry. The dessert is available in vanilla, chocolate, or a swirl, with mix-ins like homemade strawberry sauce, caramel, pretzels, peanuts, and watermelon Sour Patch Kids.

The charming bakeshop's new "Between Two Capricorns" special features a croissant filled with black tea-infused vanilla bean crème patissiere, available this weekend.

Sugarpine Drive-In List
Troutdale's retro drive-thru is hearkening back to days of yore with its "Grandma's Lemon Meringue Pie" sundae special of the week, made with vanilla soft serve, fresh lemon curd, flaky pie dough crumble, and toasted meringue bark.
